The ASUS ROG Strix B850-A Gaming WiFi is an ATX motherboard for AMD's AM5 platform. It is the foundation of a gaming or high-performance desktop: the processor, memory, storage and graphics card all connect to it, so it sets what you can build around it.

Socket and processor support

The board uses the AMD AM5 socket. ASUS says it is ready for Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 series desktop processors. Processor support can depend on the BIOS version on the board, so check ASUS's compatibility list for your exact processor.

The power design

The board has a 14+2+2 power solution, rated by ASUS at 80A per stage. In simple terms, a motherboard's power stages convert the supply voltage to what the processor needs, and more stages share the load, which typically helps with stability and heat on multi-core processors. ASUS adds an 8+8-pin ProCool power connector, alloy chokes and durable capacitors.

Cooling

Large heatsinks sit over the power stages, linked with high-conductivity thermal pads, along with an integrated I/O cover. Good cooling on this part of the board matters most when you run a demanding processor for long periods.

Memory: DDR5 and AEMP

This is a DDR5 board. AEMP is ASUS's memory profile feature, designed to simplify applying faster memory settings and so improve performance. Memory speeds that work depend on the modules and the processor, so check the memory support list.

Storage and PCIe 5.0

There are four M.2 slots, and ASUS lists PCIe 5.0 support for M.2. PCIe 5.0 offers roughly double the bandwidth of PCIe 4.0 per lane, which matters for the fastest SSDs, though most everyday tasks don't need it. Confirm which slots run at which speed in the manual, as slots often share bandwidth.

Networking and connectivity

The board has WiFi 7 with the Q-Antenna and 2.5G wired LAN. ASUS lists USB 20Gbps Type-C and "AI Networking II", which it says helps with network setup. WiFi 7 delivers its full benefit only with a compatible router.

Software and lighting

ASUS AI Advisor is meant to simplify setup and tuning. Aura Sync RGB lighting can be synchronised with other compatible devices.

Who it suits

It suits people building a new AM5 desktop who want current memory and storage standards, plenty of M.2 slots and built-in wireless, with a full-size ATX layout.

What to check before you buy

  • Case: make sure it takes ATX (about 12.0 x 9.6 in) boards.
  • Processor: check the CPU list and whether a BIOS update is needed.
  • Memory: this board takes DDR5 only.
  • Storage: count your M.2 drives and check the slot arrangement.
  • Power supply: the 8+8-pin CPU connectors need a supply with matching cables.
  • Cooler: check AM5 mounting compatibility.

The short version

  • An ATX motherboard for the AMD AM5 socket, supporting Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 series.
  • 14+2+2 power stages rated at 80A, with heatsinks and an 8+8-pin connector.
  • DDR5 with AEMP, four M.2 slots and PCIe 5.0.
  • WiFi 7, 2.5G LAN and USB 20Gbps Type-C.
