The ASUS ROG Strix B650E-F Gaming WiFi is an ATX motherboard for AMD's AM5 platform. It is the part of a desktop PC that everything else connects to, and this model offers PCIe 5.0, DDR5 memory, three M.2 slots and built-in WiFi 6E. Here is what the specs mean when you are planning a build.

Socket and processor support

The board uses AMD Socket AM5 (LGA 1718). The listing says it is ready for Ryzen 7000 series desktop processors and names Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 in its title. Support for a particular processor can depend on the BIOS version on the board, so check ASUS's CPU support list for the exact chip you plan to use. The BIOS FlashBack button lets you update the BIOS without a processor installed, which helps with that.

Power delivery and cooling

The board has 12 + 2 power stages, fed by 8 + 4 pin ProCool power connectors. ASUS says high-quality alloy chokes and durable capacitors support multi-core processors. In general, a stronger power design helps a high-core-count chip hold its speed under long loads. Large VRM heatsinks with airflow channels and high-conductivity thermal pads keep those parts cool.

Memory and storage

B650E boards use DDR5 memory. The slot count and speeds are not in the listing, so check the memory support list. For storage there are three M.2 slots: one PCIe 5.0 and two PCIe 4.0, all with heatsinks. PCIe 5.0 is the newer, faster standard, and it needs a drive built for it to make a difference. The "E" in B650E refers to PCIe 5.0 support for graphics, and the board has one PCIe 5.0 x16 SafeSlot for a graphics card. SafeSlot is ASUS's reinforced slot design.

Connectivity

  • Networking: onboard WiFi 6E (802.11ax), Bluetooth 5.2 and Intel 2.5G Ethernet with ASUS LANGuard.
  • USB: one USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C and ten more rear USB ports, plus a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C front-panel connector.
  • Video: HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4, which work with processors that have integrated graphics.

ASUS also lists Two-Way AI Noise Cancelation and AI Networking, which are software features.

Building features

The design includes a PCIe Slot Q-release, an M.2 Q-Latch and a pre-mounted I/O shield, which are meant to make fitting parts easier. Lighting is handled by Aura Sync, with one RGB header and three addressable Gen 2 RGB headers. Software includes the UEFI BIOS dashboard, Armoury Crate for lighting and device management, and a 60-day trial of AIDA64 Extreme.

Size

It is a full ATX board, so the case must support that form factor. The listing gives the package size as 10.7 x 2.1 x 13.5 inches and the weight as 3.1 lb.

Who it suits

It suits builders of a Ryzen desktop who want fast storage options, built-in WiFi and room for a powerful processor and graphics card. It is more than a small or basic build may need, and a smaller board would typically fit a compact case.

What to check before you buy

  • Processor compatibility: confirm support and the BIOS version for your chip.
  • Memory: it uses DDR5 only; older DDR4 memory will not fit.
  • Case: make sure it takes ATX boards.
  • Power supply: check it has the 8 + 4 pin connectors the board uses.
  • Drives and cooler: confirm your M.2 drives and CPU cooler suit the slots and socket.

The short version

  • An ATX AM5 motherboard for Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000 series processors.
  • 12 + 2 power stages, DDR5, one PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot and two PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots.
  • WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2 and 2.5G Ethernet; USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C.
  • BIOS FlashBack, Q-release features and Aura Sync lighting.
