The ASUS ROG Strix B650-A Gaming WiFi is a motherboard for AMD's AM5 platform. It is the part every other component plugs into, and this one is aimed at people building a gaming or general-purpose desktop around a Ryzen 7000 series processor, with room for fast storage and built-in wireless.

The AM5 socket and CPU support

AM5 (LGA1718) is the socket used by AMD's Ryzen 7000 series, and ASUS lists support for the 8000 and 9000 series as well. The listing adds that a BIOS update may be required with 9000 and 8000 series processors. In practice, that means a board's firmware may need updating before a newer CPU is recognised, so check ASUS's CPU support list for the exact board and processor you plan to pair.

Power delivery and cooling

The board has 12+2 power stages, fed by 8+4 pin ProCool connectors. Power stages convert the supply into the steady, low voltage a processor needs, and more stages typically spread the load and heat across more components. ASUS pairs them with alloy chokes and durable capacitors, which it says support multi-core processors. Large VRM heatsinks with cut airflow channels and high-conductivity thermal pads help carry heat away from those parts.

Memory and M.2 storage

The board uses DDR5 memory, which is not interchangeable with older DDR4, so any memory you reuse from an older system will not fit. There are three M.2 slots, all with heatsinks: one PCIe 5.0 and two PCIe 4.0. PCIe 5.0 SSDs offer roughly double the peak bandwidth of PCIe 4.0 on paper, though most everyday tasks feel similar, and the largest gains show in big file transfers. The heatsinks matter because fast SSDs can throttle when they run hot.

Networking and ports

The listing names Wi-Fi 6E, 2.5G LAN and a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C port. Wi-Fi 6E adds the 6GHz band when paired with a compatible router. 2.5G Ethernet is faster than standard gigabit if your router or switch supports it. USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 runs at up to 20Gbps, for fast external drives.

Size and form factor

The package measures about 10.8 x 2.9 x 13.4 inches and weighs 4.3 lb, which reflects the packaging as well as the board. The Strix B650-A is an ATX-size board, so you need a case that takes ATX. The B650 chipset sits below AMD's X-series in the lineup, a common choice for builds that do not need the most extreme overclocking.

Who it suits

It suits builders putting together a Ryzen 7000 gaming or creator PC who want a PCIe 5.0 SSD slot, wireless and a solid power section without choosing a top-end board.

What to check before you buy

  • CPU compatibility: confirm your processor is supported and whether a BIOS update is needed first.
  • Memory: this board takes DDR5 only.
  • Case and cooler: make sure the case fits ATX and your cooler clears the socket area.
  • Power supply: you need connectors for the 8+4 pin CPU power.
  • Storage plans: count the drives you want against the three M.2 slots.
  • Graphics and extras: the board has no processor graphics output unless your chosen CPU has them; check ports against your display.
  • Build guidance: follow the manual for installation and anti-static handling.

The short version

  • An ATX AM5 (LGA1718) board for Ryzen 7000, with listed support for 8000 and 9000 series.
  • 12+2 power stages, 8+4 pin ProCool connectors and large VRM heatsinks.
  • DDR5 memory and three heatsinked M.2 slots: one PCIe 5.0, two PCIe 4.0.
  • Wi-Fi 6E, 2.5G LAN and a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C port.
