The ASUS ROG Strix B550-F Gaming (Wi-Fi) is an ATX motherboard for AMD's AM4 platform. It is the part that connects the processor, memory, storage and graphics card in a desktop PC, and ASUS built this one for gaming systems with Ryzen 3000 and Ryzen 5000 processors.

Socket and processor support

AM4 is the socket used by several generations of Ryzen processors. ASUS says this board pairs with Zen 3 Ryzen 5000 and 3rd Gen Ryzen CPUs. Because older boards sometimes need a BIOS update to recognise newer processors, check ASUS's CPU support list for the specific chip you plan to use.

Memory

Four slots support dual-channel DDR4 up to 128GB in total. Dual channel means memory modules are installed in pairs for more bandwidth. ASUS says its OptiMem design enables higher memory frequencies and lower latencies. This is a DDR4 board, so DDR5 memory won't fit.

Storage: two M.2 slots

There are two M.2 slots, and ASUS says both support drives up to the 22110 length (110 mm) and NVMe RAID. One slot is PCIe 4.0, which allows the fastest consumer SSDs when used with a compatible Ryzen processor. In general, the real-world benefit of PCIe 4.0 shows up mostly in large file transfers rather than everyday use. Check the manual, because M.2 slots can share bandwidth with other connectors.

Networking

Onboard Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) offers better capacity and performance in busy wireless environments than older standards. The 2.5Gb Ethernet port runs 2.5 times faster than standard Gigabit Ethernet, but only if the router or switch on the other end also supports 2.5Gb.

Power delivery and cooling

ASUS lists 12+2 DrMOS power stages with alloy chokes and durable capacitors, intended to supply steady power to high-core-count Ryzen chips. Fanless VRM and chipset heatsinks use ASUS's Stack Cool 3+ design to improve passive cooling. A better power stage can help sustained loads on CPUs with many cores.

Design and lighting

The board has a cyberpunk-inspired look, with the ROG eye logo and etched patterns on the I/O shroud, and it supports Aura Sync RGB lighting control. Display outputs include HDMI 2.1 according to the listing, though they only work when used with a processor that has integrated graphics. The listing also mentions a PCIe 4.0 graphics slot.

Size and who it suits

The listing gives the box size as about 13.3 x 10.7 x 2.7 inches and 2.4 lb. The board follows the ATX format, so it needs a case that supports ATX. It suits people building or upgrading a Ryzen gaming PC, particularly those who want built-in Wi-Fi and fast Ethernet.

What to check before you buy

  • CPU compatibility: check the exact processor on ASUS's support list and any BIOS version needed.
  • Memory type: confirm you are using DDR4, not DDR5.
  • Case size: the case should accept ATX.
  • Storage: read the manual for which M.2 and SATA ports can be used together.
  • Network gear: 2.5Gb Ethernet needs matching equipment to reach full speed.
  • Display output: integrated graphics support depends on the CPU.

The short version

  • ATX AM4 motherboard for Ryzen 3000 and 5000 processors.
  • Four DDR4 slots up to 128GB.
  • Two M.2 slots, including PCIe 4.0, with 22110 support.
  • Wi-Fi 6, 2.5Gb Ethernet and Aura Sync lighting.
  • 12+2 DrMOS power stages and passive VRM and chipset heatsinks.
