The ASUS ROG Strix B550-F Gaming is an ATX motherboard for AMD's AM4 platform. It is the base for a gaming or general-purpose desktop built around a Ryzen processor, and it pairs the B550 chipset with PCIe 4.0 support, two M.2 slots and a 2.5Gbps network port.
Socket and processor support
The AM4 socket is the heart of the compatibility story. ASUS lists support for AMD Ryzen 5000, 4000G and 3000 series processors. The listing also notes that newer chips, including the Ryzen 7 5800X3D and 5700X and the Ryzen 5 5600, 5500, 4600G, 4500 and 4100, rely on a BIOS update available from the manufacturer's website. In practice, a board on an older BIOS version may not start with a newer processor, so check the board's BIOS version before you pair it with one.
Memory
There are four DDR4 slots, supporting up to 128GB in total. ASUS highlights its OptiMem II design, which it says helps the memory reach its potential. DDR4 is not interchangeable with DDR5, so memory from a newer platform will not fit. Speed and capacity limits also depend on the processor and the modules, so check the memory compatibility list on the manufacturer's site.
Power delivery
The board has 12+2 power phases, ProCool connectors, alloy coils and durable capacitors. The phases feed the processor, and more phases typically help deliver steady current under heavy load, especially on higher-core-count Ryzen chips. ASUS describes this as stable and secure current delivery.
Storage, PCIe 4.0 and connectivity
PCIe 4.0 roughly doubles the bandwidth per lane compared with PCIe 3.0, which matters mostly for fast NVMe SSDs and recent graphics cards. The chipset provides the support, but PCIe 4.0 operation also depends on the processor: Ryzen 3000 series chips generally run their lanes at PCIe 3.0 speeds on this class of board. The board has two M.2 slots for SSDs.
For ports, the listing names USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A and Type-C connectors, HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.2. Motherboard video outputs only work with a processor that has integrated graphics, such as the "G" models. Wired networking uses an Intel 2.5Gbps Ethernet port; to use the full speed you need a router or switch that supports 2.5Gbps as well.
Lighting
Aura Sync with an A-RBG Gen 2 connector lets compatible lighting devices, from fans to strips, share one effect, controlled through ASUS software.
Size
It measures about 12.0 x 9.6 inches (30.5 x 24.4 cm) and weighs around 2 lb (0.9 kg). The ATX size needs a case that supports ATX boards, which most mid-size and full towers do.
Who it suits
This board suits builders putting together or upgrading an AM4 desktop, particularly those who want a good mix of storage slots, fast networking and lighting control. It is not for Intel processors or for DDR5 memory.
What to check before you buy
- Processor: confirm that your Ryzen chip is on the manufacturer's support list and whether it needs a BIOS update first.
- Memory: it takes DDR4 only.
- Case: check ATX support and the room for your cooler and graphics card.
- Display output: you need a processor with integrated graphics to use the motherboard's video ports.
- Network: a 2.5Gbps port needs matching network gear to run at full speed.
- Power supply: make sure it has the connectors the board and processor require.
