The ASUS ROG Ally X (model RC72LA) is a handheld gaming console that runs full Windows 11 Home. It has a 7-inch 120Hz display, an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, 24GB of RAM and a 1TB PCIe SSD. ASUS describes it as a refresh of the ROG Ally, in black, with a new handle and redesigned keys.
A PC in a handheld
Because it runs Windows 11 Home, the Ally X can typically install the same game launchers and apps you use on a desktop or laptop, so you can access your existing game libraries. ASUS also notes that it can be used as a fully equipped laptop when connected to a keyboard, mouse and display. That flexibility is the main difference from consoles that run a locked-down system.
Processor, memory and storage
The AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme is a processor with integrated graphics designed for handhelds. Integrated graphics share memory with the system, so the 24GB of RAM is relevant for both games and general use. The 1TB PCIe SSD holds a sizeable game library, and an SD card slot extends it. ASUS also says you can connect an external graphics card, which typically means a separate dock with its own power.
Display and connectivity
The screen is a 7-inch glossy panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, which typically makes motion look smoother in games that can reach high frame rates. Handheld PCs often run demanding games at lower settings than desktops, so frame rates vary with the title. Wi-Fi 6E is included for fast wireless connections.
Comfort, cooling and charging
ASUS lists an ergonomic design and a dual-fan cooling system meant to keep long sessions comfortable. The listing gives its dimensions as about 11.0 x 4.4 x 1.5 inches and its weight as about 1.5 lb (around 0.7 kg). ASUS also states a 50% battery charge in 30 minutes. Battery life for a handheld varies with the game and power settings, so check ASUS's figures for your usage.
Who it suits
It suits people who want to play PC games away from the desk, from the sofa to a trip, and who like the openness of Windows. It may also appeal to those who want a small second computer. If you want the simplicity of a console with automatic game installation and a controller-first interface, a locked-down handheld may be easier.
What to check before you buy
- Your games: check that your usual launchers and titles run well on integrated graphics.
- Battery: handhelds typically run for a few hours at best on demanding games, so plan for charging.
- Accessories: check what is included, and whether you need a case, dock or SD card.
- Windows setup: Windows on a small touchscreen needs some adjustment; controller use is simplest within game launchers.
- Storage: 1TB is a lot for a handheld, but large games add up quickly.
- Warranty and support: check the terms from the seller and ASUS.
