The ASUS ProArt PA278QV is a 27-inch monitor aimed at photo editing, design and video work, where colours need to look the way they will in the final file. It has a WQHD IPS panel, factory calibration and a stand that adjusts in several directions. Here is what its specifications mean for everyday use.
Resolution and size
WQHD is 2560 x 1440 pixels, sometimes called 1440p. On a 27-inch screen, this gives more working space than Full HD and sharper text and images, without the scaling adjustments that 4K usually needs at this size. Many people find it a comfortable middle step for editing and office work.
The panel is IPS, which typically keeps colour and contrast steady across wide viewing angles. The frameless design leaves thin borders, which also helps if you put two screens side by side.
What 100% sRGB and Rec. 709 mean
ASUS lists 100% coverage of both sRGB and Rec. 709. sRGB is the standard colour space for the web and most photos, and Rec. 709 is the standard for HD video. Covering 100% of them means the monitor can display all the colours those standards define. It is the right target for web, social media and HD video work.
Work meant for wide-gamut printing or cinema formats typically calls for a monitor with a larger gamut, which this one does not claim.
Calibration and Delta E
The monitor is Calman Verified and factory calibrated, with a Delta E below 2 according to ASUS. Delta E measures the difference between the colour shown and the colour intended. Lower is better, and a value under 2 is generally hard to see by eye. Factory calibration means colour should be close to accurate from the first use, though people who need strict accuracy often recalibrate regularly with a measuring device.
ASUS also provides ProArt Preset and ProArt Palette, which let you choose colour modes and adjust parameters such as colour temperature and gamma.
Ports and ergonomics
Connectivity covers Mini DisplayPort, DisplayPort, HDMI and dual-link DVI-D, plus an audio input, an earphone jack and four USB 3.0 ports. That range suits both newer and older computers.
The ergonomic stand tilts, pivots, swivels and adjusts in height. Pivot lets you rotate the screen to portrait, handy for long documents. The monitor measures about 24.2 inches wide and weighs 17 lb, and ASUS also lists Eye Care technology.
Who it suits
It suits photographers, designers, video editors and students who want reliable sRGB colour out of the box, and anyone who wants a 1440p workspace with plenty of ports and an adjustable stand.
What to check before you buy
- Your use: sRGB and Rec. 709 cover most web and HD video work, but not wide-gamut print or HDR work.
- Graphics output: check that your computer has a matching port and can drive 2560 x 1440.
- Desk space: allow for a 27-inch screen and its stand, or check the VESA mounting options in the manual.
- Refresh rate: check the specification sheet if you also plan to play fast games.
- Calibration: consider a colour measuring device if your work requires strict accuracy.
- What's in the box: confirm which cables are included.
