The ASUS ProArt Display PA147CDV is a 14-inch portable touch screen with an unusual very wide shape. It is a secondary display for creators: it holds toolbars, timelines or reference material beside your main screen, and it responds to touch and a pen. Here is what the specs mean and how it fits into a workflow.

A 32:9 strip, not a full screen

The panel is 1920 x 550 pixels, a 32:9 aspect ratio. A standard monitor is 16:9, so this display is roughly half as tall for its width. It is not meant to replace a main monitor. It works as a companion strip: put a video timeline, a palette, chat windows, music controls or reference images on it and keep your main work area clear. It can be used in landscape or in portrait, thanks to the kickstand.

Colour accuracy

The IPS panel covers 100% of sRGB and 100% of Rec. 709, the standard for web and HD video. ASUS says each unit is factory calibrated to a colour accuracy of Delta E below 2 and is Calman Verified. In general, a Delta E under 2 means the difference between what is shown and the target colour is hard to see by eye. That matters for creative work, though anyone doing professional print or wide-gamut work should check whether sRGB and Rec. 709 are enough.

Touch and pen

The screen supports 10-point multitouch and the Microsoft Pen Protocol 2.0 (MPP 2.0). That means it works with compatible MPP pens, which are sold separately and aren't listed in the box. Check your pen model supports MPP 2.0 and your operating system supports it too.

Dial and control panel

ASUS adds a physical Dial and Control Panel which provide shortcuts in supported Adobe creative software. A dial is useful for adjusting brush size, scrubbing through a timeline or zooming without moving to the keyboard. Support depends on the software and version, so check ASUS's compatibility list.

Kickstand and size

A patented mechanical kickstand folds out and holds the display in portrait or landscape orientation. The display measures about 14.1 x 5.0 inches, is 0.8 inches thick and weighs about 2.1 lb, so it travels easily.

Ports and box contents

There is one standard HDMI port and two USB Type-C ports with DisplayPort Alt Mode. A single USB-C cable can often carry both video and power from a compatible laptop; otherwise use the power adapter. The listed box contents are a micro-HDMI to HDMI cable, a USB C to C cable, a USB C to A cable and adapter, a power adapter, a sleeve, a warranty card and a quick start guide.

Eye care

ASUS lists TÜV Rheinland-certified flicker-free and low blue light technology for comfortable viewing.

Who it suits

It suits video editors, photographers, illustrators, streamers and designers who work on a laptop and want extra screen space and dial controls. It also suits anyone who wants a slim, light display with touch.

What to check before you buy

  • Port support: confirm your laptop's USB-C port supports DisplayPort video, or use the HDMI.
  • Pen: confirm you have or will buy an MPP 2.0 pen.
  • Software: check that your apps support the dial shortcuts.
  • Aspect ratio: think about whether the narrow 32:9 shape suits your layout.
  • Desk space: leave room for the stand and cables.
  • Operating system: check driver and touch support on your system.
