The ASUS Pro WS W880-ACE SE is an ATX motherboard for Intel's LGA 1851 socket, built for workstations rather than gaming builds. It pairs current Intel Core Ultra processors with ECC-capable DDR5 memory, fast expansion slots and a built-in remote management controller. Here is what those features mean and what to check before planning a build around it.

Socket, memory and platform

The LGA 1851 socket takes Intel Core Ultra (Series 2) desktop processors; ASUS names Core Ultra 9, 7 and 5 chips. The board supports DDR5 in both ECC and non-ECC unbuffered (UDIMM) form. ECC memory detects and corrects single-bit errors, which matters for long renders, simulations and databases where a silent memory error could corrupt results. ECC only works when the processor, chipset and memory modules all support it, so confirm that combination before buying.

Power delivery

ASUS lists an 8+1+2+2 arrangement of 80A DrMOS power stages, along with ProCool II power connectors, alloy chokes and durable capacitors. In general, more and stronger power stages help a board deliver steady current to a demanding processor under sustained load, which is the situation workstations spend much of their time in.

Expansion and storage

There are two PCIe 5.0 slots that ASUS says support next-generation graphics cards at full x16 width, protected by SafeSlot reinforcement. PCIe 5.0 doubles the bandwidth of PCIe 4.0 per lane, which benefits GPUs for rendering or compute and fast add-in cards. Storage comes from four M.2 slots: one PCIe 5.0 and three PCIe 4.0. A front-panel USB 20Gbps header lets a compatible case provide a USB-C port at the front.

Networking and ports

ASUS lists dual 2.5 Gb Ethernet, one Thunderbolt 4 Type-C port and HDMI output. Thunderbolt 4 is typically used for fast external storage, docks and displays. The HDMI output works with the integrated graphics of processors that include them.

Remote management with the BMC

The notable workstation feature is the ASPEED AST2600 baseboard management controller (BMC), reached through a dedicated LAN port. A BMC lets an administrator reset or power-cycle the machine and monitor it remotely, even when the operating system is not running. ASUS pairs it with ASUS Control Center Express for monitoring and management. This is the sort of tool normally found on servers, and it suits small offices, labs and remote workstations.

Cooling and DIY features

ASUS highlights AI Cooling II, AI Advisor and NPU boost, along with Fan Xpert 4 for fan control. Build-friendly details include the M.2 Q-Latch, Q-Connector, Q-LED and Q-CODE diagnostics, and BIOS FlashBack, which typically lets you update the BIOS from a USB drive without a processor installed. The board carries TUV GREEN MARK certification and supports Windows 11 (22H2 and later) and Windows 10 64-bit (21H2 and later).

What to check before you buy

  • Processor support: confirm your exact CPU is on ASUS's support list for this board and for the BIOS version it ships with.
  • Memory: if you want ECC, check that the CPU and modules support it; confirm module type (UDIMM) and speed.
  • Case and cooler: it is a full ATX board, so check case size and LGA 1851 cooler mounting.
  • Expansion needs: count the GPUs, capture cards and M.2 drives you plan to use, and how they share lanes.
  • Management setup: the BMC needs a network connection and some configuration; read the manual on setup and network security.
  • Power: check your power supply's connectors for the processor and graphics card.

The short version

  • ATX workstation motherboard for Intel LGA 1851 Core Ultra (Series 2) processors.
  • DDR5 ECC and non-ECC UDIMM support, with 8+1+2+2 80A power stages.
  • Two PCIe 5.0 x16 SafeSlots and four M.2 slots (one PCIe 5.0, three PCIe 4.0).
  • Thunderbolt 4, dual 2.5 Gb Ethernet and HDMI.
  • AST2600 BMC with a dedicated LAN port for remote management.
