The ASUS Pro WS TRX50-SAGE WIFI is a CEB-format workstation motherboard for AMD's sTR5 socket. It is designed for professional machines used in AI training, deep learning, animation, 3D rendering and media production, where many cores, lots of memory and several graphics cards matter. Here is what its main specs mean.
Socket sTR5 and Threadripper processors
The board uses the AMD sTR5 socket and, according to ASUS, is ready for AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7000 WX-Series and Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Series processors, with support for up to 96 cores. Core count matters for tasks that split into many parallel jobs, such as rendering, simulation and compiling. A motherboard socket only accepts its matching processor family, so this board is not a fit for standard desktop Ryzen or Intel chips.
ECC R-DIMM DDR5 memory
The listing states support for up to 1TB of ECC R-DIMM DDR5 memory at one module per channel (1DPC). ECC (error-correcting code) memory can detect and correct certain memory errors, which is why it is common in workstations and servers where long jobs need to stay accurate. R-DIMM means registered memory, a type that supports larger capacities but can't be swapped for ordinary desktop modules. ASUS also mentions CPU and memory overclocking support.
Power and cooling
Large processors draw a lot of current. The board has 36 power stages and two 8-pin CPU power connectors, with large heatsinks over the voltage regulator module (VRM), the chipset and the M.2 slots, plus an M.2 thermal pad. Together these are meant to keep power delivery and fast SSDs within sensible temperatures under sustained loads. Your power supply needs to provide the matching connectors.
Expansion and storage
ASUS lists three PCIe 5.0 x16 slots, which is where multi-GPU setups or other add-in cards go. PCIe 5.0 doubles the per-lane bandwidth of PCIe 4.0, and it benefits the newest graphics cards and fast storage. Storage options include three M.2 slots and SlimSAS NVMe support. A CEB board is a little larger than ATX, so confirm your case supports the format.
Networking and USB
Networking includes WiFi 7, 10 Gb and 2.5 Gb LAN ports. A 10 Gb port is useful when moving large project files to a network storage unit, as long as the rest of your network can also run at 10 Gb. The board has front and rear USB 20Gbps Type-C ports.
IPMI remote management
ASUS lists hardware and software support for its IPMI expansion cards, along with ASUS Control Center Express software for monitoring and management. IPMI lets administrators monitor and control a machine remotely, even when its operating system is not running. The listing says the board comes with centralized management software. Note that the expansion card is a separate item unless the listing says otherwise.
Size and weight
The board is listed at 14.9 x 12.7 inches (about 38 x 32 cm) in packaging dimensions, and weighs 5.5 lb (about 2.5 kg).
Who it suits
It suits professionals and IT administrators who are building a high-end workstation for rendering, AI development, media production or multi-GPU work. It is not aimed at standard home desktops.
What to check before you buy
- Processor: confirm your CPU is a supported sTR5 Threadripper model.
- Memory: this board takes ECC R-DIMM DDR5, so check the module type and capacity you plan to use.
- Case: check that it accepts CEB boards and has enough expansion slots for your cards.
- Power supply: confirm it has the connectors for two 8-pin CPU inputs and your graphics cards.
- Cooling: sTR5 coolers are specific, so check the cooler's socket compatibility.
- Firmware and manual: check ASUS's support page for BIOS versions and setup steps.
