The ASUS Prime Z690-P WiFi is an ATX motherboard for 12th Gen Intel Core processors on the LGA 1700 socket. It supports DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0, and adds WiFi 6, 2.5Gb Ethernet and three M.2 slots. ASUS positions it for everyday users and DIY PC builders.

Socket and memory

The LGA 1700 socket is the one used by 12th Gen Intel Core chips. Always check the CPU compatibility list on the maker's support page, since the supported processors depend on the BIOS version. The board uses DDR5 memory, which is not interchangeable with DDR4: the modules have a different notch and won't fit the slot. ASUS says its OptiMem II trace layout helps memory kits run at higher frequencies with lower voltages.

PCIe 5.0 in plain terms

PCIe 5.0 is the newest generation of the connection used by graphics cards and fast SSDs, and it offers roughly twice the bandwidth of PCIe 4.0 per lane. Current graphics cards and drives rarely use all of that bandwidth, so the main benefit is room for future components. ASUS also lists three M.2 slots for NVMe SSDs.

Power and cooling

ASUS lists a 14+1 DrMOS power design, with ProCool power connector, alloy chokes and durable capacitors, to give stable power to the processor. Cooling includes a large VRM heatsink, a flexible M.2 heatsink, a PCH heatsink, hybrid fan headers and Fan Xpert 4 software for tuning fan speeds. Good airflow in the case still matters more than any single heatsink.

Connectivity

The board lists WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, Realtek 2.5Gb Ethernet, a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C port and a front-panel USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C connector. The listing also mentions support for Thunderbolt 4 through a header, which would require a separate add-in card. The board is Windows 11 ready, and Aura Sync lighting is listed.

Size and weight

An ATX board is the standard full-size desktop format, so it needs an ATX-compatible case. The listing shows 3.3 lb (about 1.5 kg) for the packaged product.

Who it suits

It suits someone building or upgrading a desktop around a 12th Gen Intel processor, particularly if they want DDR5, built-in wireless and a few M.2 drives without moving to a premium board.

What to check before you buy

  • Processor: confirm that your exact CPU is supported, and whether the BIOS needs an update first.
  • Memory: it takes DDR5 only, so DDR4 sets from an older build can't be reused.
  • Case: check that your case supports ATX boards and has room for your cooler and graphics card.
  • Storage: count the drives you plan to use and compare them with the M.2 slots and SATA ports.
  • Add-in cards: Thunderbolt 4 needs a header-compatible card, and the card must be supported by the board, so read the manual.
  • Power supply: make sure it has the connectors the board and CPU need.
  • Operating system: the board is Windows 11 ready; you'll need your own licence.

The short version

  • An ATX motherboard for 12th Gen Intel Core CPUs on the LGA 1700 socket.
  • DDR5 memory, PCIe 5.0 and three M.2 slots.
  • 14+1 DrMOS power stages with VRM, M.2 and PCH heatsinks.
  • WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.2 and 2.5Gb Ethernet, with USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C.
  • Check CPU support, memory type and case size before building around it.
