The ASUS Prime X670E-PRO WiFi is an ATX motherboard for AMD's AM5 platform. It connects the processor, DDR5 memory, storage, graphics card and network, and it is built for people putting together a modern Ryzen desktop who want fast storage options and built-in wireless networking.

The AM5 socket and processor support

AM5 is the socket used by AMD's Ryzen 7000 series desktop processors, and ASUS says this board is ready for them. The product title also names Ryzen 8000 and 9000 series chips. As with any board, a newer processor may need a BIOS update before it starts, and the board includes a BIOS FlashBack feature that lets you update firmware from a USB drive. ASUS describes it as a way to do this without a processor installed, which is useful when a new chip is not yet supported out of the box.

What PCIe 5.0 means for you

PCIe is the connection used by graphics cards and fast SSDs. Version 5.0 doubles the per-lane bandwidth of version 4.0. The listing names PCIe 5.0 support, and in practice the benefit depends on the parts you install: you need a PCIe 5.0 device, and many current graphics cards and drives do not use all of the extra bandwidth. It does leave room for future upgrades.

Four M.2 slots and cooling

There are four M.2 slots for NVMe SSDs, which gives room to add drives over time without reaching for extra adapters. ASUS includes M.2 heatsinks and an M.2 Q-Latch, a tool-free retention design that holds drives in place. Fast SSDs can slow themselves down when they get hot, so heatsinks are a practical addition.

The board's power delivery is listed as 14plus2 teamed power stages with ProCool sockets, alloy chokes and durable capacitors, and ASUS says this gives stable power to the processor. Large VRM heatsinks cool those stages. Fan control comes from hybrid fan headers and Fan Xpert 4.

Networking and connections

Built-in WiFi 6E adds support for the 6 GHz band where your router and region allow it, and Realtek 2.5 Gb Ethernet suits wired connections faster than standard Gigabit. ASUS also lists LANGuard, its protection feature for the network port.

For USB, the board offers USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C, which is rated at up to 20 Gbit/s, plus a front-panel USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C connector and USB4 header support. Two-way AI Noise Cancelation, according to ASUS, reduces background noise from the microphone and the audio output, which is useful for voice chat and video calls.

Building aids and lighting

PCIe Slot Q-Release and the M.2 Q-Latch are meant to make installing and removing parts easier. Lighting comes from the edge-lit design and addressable RGB headers, with RGB strip header support. You can leave the lighting off in a plain build.

Who it suits

It suits builders starting a new AM5 system, especially those who want several NVMe drives, wireless networking built in and room to upgrade later. It is a full-size ATX board, so it needs a case that accepts that size.

What to check before you buy

  • Memory type: this board uses DDR5, so DDR4 modules from an older PC will not fit.
  • Processor and BIOS: confirm your chip is on the support list and whether a BIOS update is needed.
  • Case and cooler: check ATX support, and that your processor cooler is compatible with the AM5 socket.
  • Graphics: AM5 processors differ in whether they include built-in graphics, so check yours before counting on the video outputs.
  • Drives: make sure the M.2 drives you plan to use match the slot types in the manual.
  • Power supply: confirm it has the connectors the manual describes.

The short version

  • An ATX motherboard with an AM5 socket for AMD Ryzen desktop processors.
  • PCIe 5.0, four M.2 slots with heatsinks, and DDR5 memory.
  • WiFi 6E, 2.5 Gb Ethernet, USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C and USB4 header support.
  • 14plus2 power stages with large VRM heatsinks.
  • BIOS FlashBack, Q-Release and Q-Latch to simplify building.
