The ASUS PRIME H610I-PLUS D4 is a mini-ITX motherboard with an LGA 1700 socket for 12th Gen Intel processors. Mini-ITX is the smallest common desktop standard, so this board is built for compact PCs and small-form-factor cases, using DDR4 memory.
Socket and chipset
LGA 1700 is the socket Intel introduced with its 12th Gen Core processors, and ASUS lists this board as ready for them. The H610 chipset sits at the entry end of Intel's 600 series. Boards at this level typically skip features such as processor overclocking, which suits ordinary home and office builds. Before buying a processor, check ASUS's CPU support list for this exact model, as some chips need a BIOS version the board may or may not ship with.
Mini-ITX size
Mini-ITX boards measure 170 x 170 mm (6.7 x 6.7 inches). That small footprint comes with trade-offs: usually one expansion slot and two memory slots. The listing doesn't state the number of memory slots, so check the specification sheet. The board is described as having a PCIe 4.0 slot with SafeSlot core, which ASUS says reinforces the slot. In general, PCIe 4.0 offers double the per-lane bandwidth of PCIe 3.0, when the graphics card and processor also support it.
DDR4 memory
DDR4 is the older memory generation, and a DDR4 board needs DDR4 modules, not DDR5. The two are not interchangeable. If you already own DDR4 memory, this can let you reuse it.
Storage and connectivity
ASUS lists a 32Gbps M.2 slot, which is the speed of PCIe 3.0 x4 for NVMe drives, and SATA 6Gb/s ports for other drives. For networking, there's Realtek 1 Gb Ethernet. A separate V-M.2 Key E slot is provided for a Wi-Fi card, so the board is Wi-Fi ready but the card is not stated as included. USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports cover everyday peripherals.
Display outputs include DisplayPort, HDMI and D-Sub. These use the processor's integrated graphics, so a processor with integrated graphics lets you use them without a separate graphics card.
Power and cooling
ASUS describes 5+1+1 power stages with a heatsink on the voltage regulators, plus a chipset heatsink and Fan Xpert software for fan control. That suits processors at the lower and mid power ranges. ASUS also lists Q-LED, which uses indicator lights during start-up to show where a problem lies, an audio mono-out header with an amplifier IC, and an SPI TPM header for adding a security module.
Who it suits
It suits people building small desktops, home-office PCs, media or home-server machines, and anyone wanting to reuse DDR4 memory. It's less suited to those wanting several expansion cards or many memory slots.
What to check before you buy
- Processor: confirm your chip is on ASUS's support list.
- Memory: buy DDR4 modules, and check the supported speeds and maximum.
- Case: confirm the case supports mini-ITX and your cooler fits.
- Wi-Fi: if you want wireless, check that a Key E card is needed separately.
- Ports: compare the rear ports with your monitors and peripherals.
