The ASUS Prime B850-PLUS WiFi is an ATX motherboard for AMD's AM5 socket, built on the newer B850 chipset. It supports DDR5 memory, PCIe 5.0 expansion and storage, and includes Wi-Fi 6E and 2.5Gb Ethernet. Here is what its specs mean when you plan a build.
Socket, chipset and processors
The board uses the AMD B850 chipset with an AM5 socket. ASUS lists support for Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 Series desktop processors. Because a board's factory BIOS can limit which chips boot straight away, check ASUS's support page for your processor. BIOS FlashBack lets you update the BIOS from a USB drive without a processor installed.
Power design
ASUS describes an 8+2+1 digital phase design on a 6-layer PCB, with alloy chokes and durable capacitors. In general, the power phases smooth the voltage delivered to the processor, and a design like this is typically aimed at mainstream Ryzen builds. ASUS says the aim is stability, performance and compatibility.
Memory and PCIe 5.0
The board supports DDR5 memory only; DDR4 modules won't fit. PCIe 5.0 doubles the bandwidth of PCIe 4.0 per lane. The listing includes a PCIe 5.0 x16 slot for a graphics card and PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots for fast SSDs, with three M.2 slots in total. Today, PCIe 5.0 drives show their advantage mostly in large file transfers, and PCIe 4.0 drives remain fast for everyday use.
Connectivity
Wi-Fi 6E adds the 6GHz band, and Realtek 2.5Gb Ethernet gives a faster wired connection than standard gigabit. At the rear, there are USB 10Gbps Type-A and Type-C ports, and the board supports a front USB 5Gbps Type-C connector. DisplayPort and HDMI outputs are available for processors with integrated graphics.
Cooling
ASUS lists heatsinks on the VRM, the M.2 slots and the chipset, plus hybrid fan headers and Fan Xpert 2+ for fan control. Three Addressable RGB Gen 2 headers work with Aura Sync for lighting.
Software and build aids
Software includes Armoury Crate, ASUS AI Advisor, ASUS DriverHub, GlideX and MyHotkey. AI Advisor is ASUS's assistant for tuning and troubleshooting the board. Hardware aids include a pre-mounted I/O shield, Q-Antenna, Q-Dashboard and Q-LED Core, which are designed to make assembly and diagnosis easier. The listing also marks the board as CEC Tier II ready, which relates to energy-use regulations in some regions.
Who it suits
It suits builders after a current AM5 ATX board with the latest memory and storage standards, built-in wireless and the usual DIY aids, for a general-purpose or gaming PC.
What to check before you buy
- Processor: confirm your Ryzen model and the BIOS version it needs.
- Memory: buy DDR5 modules, and check the board's supported speeds in the manual.
- Case: an ATX board needs a compatible case.
- M.2 layout: check which M.2 slots run at PCIe 5.0 speed and whether using one disables another port.
- Cooler: confirm your cooler supports AM5 mounting.
- Graphics outputs: the video ports need a processor with integrated graphics.
- Front panel: the front USB Type-C connector needs a case cable to match.
The short version
- ATX motherboard for AMD AM5 on the B850 chipset, with DDR5 support.
- 8+2+1 phase power design on a 6-layer PCB.
- PCIe 5.0 x16 slot, PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots and three M.2 slots in all.
- Wi-Fi 6E, 2.5Gb Ethernet, USB 10Gbps ports and BIOS FlashBack.
