The ASUS Prime B660-PLUS D4 is an ATX motherboard for 12th Gen Intel Core, Pentium Gold and Celeron processors. It uses DDR4 memory, which lets builders reuse existing RAM or pick an older memory type, and it offers PCIe 4.0, three M.2 slots and 2.5Gb Ethernet. This page explains what those terms mean and what must match when you build around it.
Socket and processors
The board uses the Intel LGA 1700 socket, which ASUS lists as ready for 12th Gen Intel Core, Pentium Gold and Celeron processors. The socket is a physical fit as well as an electrical one: a processor from another socket generation will not install. Some LGA 1700 boards need a BIOS update to accept newer chips, so check ASUS's CPU support list for this model.
The B660 chipset is a mainstream tier. In general, it supports the features most builders need, but it does not allow the processor overclocking available on higher-tier Intel chipsets.
DDR4 memory
The "D4" in the name means DDR4 memory slots. DDR4 and DDR5 modules are physically different and don't fit each other's slots, so the RAM you buy must be DDR4. ASUS describes OptiMem, which is careful routing of traces and vias to preserve signal integrity for improved memory stability. Check the manual for the supported speeds, capacity and slot count.
PCIe 4.0 and storage
The listing mentions PCIe 4.0, which gives graphics cards and fast SSDs more bandwidth than PCIe 3.0. There are three M.2 slots for compact solid-state drives, so you can add several drives without cables. Which slots run at which speed, and whether using one disables a SATA port, is set out in the manual. A fast PCIe 4.0 drive will only reach top speed in a slot that supports it.
Connectivity
Rear and front ports include:
- a rear USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C port, with a data rate of up to 20Gbps;
- a front-panel USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C connector for a compatible case;
- a Thunderbolt 4 header, supporting an add-in card;
- 2.5Gb Ethernet.
The 2.5Gb LAN port runs faster than gigabit Ethernet when your router or switch and cable support it. The listing doesn't mention built-in Wi-Fi, so check the full specification before assuming a wireless connection. The Thunderbolt 4 header needs a separate card.
Cooling and tuning
ASUS lists a VRM heatsink, an M.2 heatsink, a PCH heatsink, hybrid fan headers and Fan Xpert 2+. The VRM supplies power to the CPU, and the heatsinks help it and the M.2 drives keep their temperatures under control. Fan Xpert 2+ is ASUS's software for fan curves, and the "hybrid" headers accept both three-pin and four-pin fans. The brand describes the board as offering tuning options through included software and hardware for daily users and DIY builders.
Size and who it suits
The ATX board measures about 13.0 x 10.5 inches and weighs 2.3 lb. It needs a case that supports the ATX form factor. It suits DIY builders and upgraders assembling a 12th Gen Intel system who want a straightforward board with a reasonable number of storage slots and fast wired networking.
What to check before you buy
- CPU support: confirm that your processor is on the ASUS support list and whether your board version needs a BIOS update.
- Memory type: buy DDR4, not DDR5.
- Case size: check ATX support in the case.
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth: plan for an add-in card or adapter if you need them.
- Graphics: the listing does not mention integrated video outputs, so check the specification if you plan to use a processor's built-in graphics.
- Power connectors: confirm that your power supply has the CPU and motherboard cables the manual lists.
The short version
