The ASUS Prime B650-PLUS is an ATX motherboard for AMD Ryzen 7000 series desktop processors. It uses the AM5 socket and DDR5 memory, and it is aimed at everyday users and DIY builders who want current connectivity and some tuning options. Here is what the main specs mean.

The AM5 socket and B650 chipset

The board has an AMD AM5 socket, which ASUS lists as ready for Ryzen 7000 series desktop processors. AM5 is a land-grid-array design, so the pins are in the socket rather than on the processor. The B650 chipset sits in the middle of AMD's range, and boards like this typically offer overclocking support for memory and, depending on the chip, the processor, along with a good number of fast ports.

DDR5 memory and ASUS OptiMem II

Ryzen 7000 uses DDR5 memory only, and DDR5 modules do not fit older DDR4 slots. The board's ASUS OptiMem II design involves careful routing of traces and vias, plus ground layer optimizations to preserve signal integrity. ASUS says this helps memory overclocking. Actual memory speeds that work also depend on the modules and the processor, so check the memory support list on the product page.

Storage and PCIe 5.0

The board supports M.2 PCIe 5.0, the newest generation of the interface used by SSDs. PCIe 5.0 doubles the bandwidth per lane over PCIe 4.0. Drives for it exist, but in everyday work such as booting and loading apps, the difference from a good PCIe 4.0 drive is often small. It matters more for very large file transfers.

Connectivity

The listing names Realtek 2.5Gb Ethernet, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port on the back, a front USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C connector, DisplayPort and HDMI outputs, and USB4 support. The video outputs only work with processors that have integrated graphics, which in the Ryzen 7000 line is the case for most, though not all, models. BIOS Flashback, mentioned in the product title, lets you update the firmware from a USB stick without a processor installed, which is handy when a new CPU needs a newer BIOS.

Cooling and lighting

Cooling features include a VRM heatsink (the power delivery for the processor), an M.2 heatsink, a chipset heatsink, hybrid fan headers and Fan Xpert 2plus, which is ASUS's fan control software. For lighting, there are addressable Gen 2 headers and an Aura RGB header for LED strips, synced through Aura Sync with compatible hardware.

Who it suits

It suits someone building a new Ryzen 7000 desktop in a standard ATX case who wants DDR5, a fast M.2 slot and a decent number of ports. Because it is a full-size ATX board, it also has more expansion slots than a micro-ATX model.

What to check before you buy

  • Processor: confirm the CPU you plan to use is on ASUS's compatibility list and whether it needs a BIOS update.
  • Memory: buy DDR5 modules and check the supported list.
  • Case and size: ATX is 12 x 9.6 inches; confirm your case supports it.
  • Display output: check whether your processor has integrated graphics if you plan to use the board's video ports.
  • Storage: count the M.2 and SATA connectors you need.
  • Cooler: confirm your cooler's AM5 mounting.

The short version

  • An ATX motherboard for AMD Ryzen 7000 on the AM5 socket, model PRIME B650-PLUS.
  • DDR5 memory, M.2 PCIe 5.0 and Realtek 2.5Gb Ethernet.
  • USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C, front Type-C, USB4 support, DisplayPort and HDMI.
  • VRM, M.2 and chipset heatsinks, hybrid fan headers and Aura Sync RGB.
