ASUS Prime B650-Plus AM5 Motherboard: features, specs and who it suits

An ATX AM5 motherboard for Ryzen 7000 processors with DDR5, a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot, 2.5Gb Ethernet and USB-C. What the specs mean for a PC build.

The ASUS Prime B650-Plus is an ATX motherboard built around AMD's AM5 socket. It is the board that everything else in a desktop PC plugs into: the processor, memory, storage, graphics card and ports. This page explains what its listed specs mean and what to confirm before planning a build around it.

What the AM5 socket means

AM5 is the socket used by AMD Ryzen 7000 Series desktop processors, and ASUS lists the board as ready for them. A socket is physical and electrical: a processor made for a different socket will not fit. AM5 also uses DDR5 memory only, so older DDR4 modules are not compatible. The listing specifies DDR5, which is the memory type to buy alongside it.

Storage and expansion: PCIe 5.0 and SATA

The board supports M.2 SSDs over PCIe 5.0. Each PCIe generation roughly doubles the bandwidth of the one before, so a PCIe 5.0 drive can in principle move data much faster than a PCIe 4.0 one. In everyday use, the gain depends on the drive itself, and the first PCIe 5.0 drives tend to run hotter. That is one reason ASUS includes an M.2 heatsink.

SATA 6 Gbps ports are also listed, which suit older 2.5-inch SSDs and hard drives, so existing storage can move over to a new build.

Connectivity

ASUS lists the following:

  • Realtek 2.5Gb Ethernet, faster than standard gigabit if your router and cabling support it.
  • USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C on the rear panel.
  • A front-panel USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C connector, for cases with a USB-C port on the front.
  • USB4 support.
  • DisplayPort and HDMI outputs, for use with Ryzen processors that include integrated graphics.

Whether the video outputs work depends on the processor installed, so check that your chosen CPU has integrated graphics if you plan to use them.

Cooling and power design

ASUS describes a robust power design and fits heatsinks over the VRM (the voltage regulators that feed the processor), the M.2 slot and the PCH chipset. Hybrid fan headers accept either three-pin or four-pin fans, and the Fan Xpert 2+ software handles fan curves. Better cooling around the power circuitry typically helps a processor hold its speed under long loads.

Memory tuning and firmware tools

ASUS OptiMem II refers to careful routing of memory traces and vias and ground-layer work intended to preserve signal integrity, which ASUS says helps memory overclocking. The board also lists BIOS Flashback, a feature that typically lets you update the firmware from a USB drive without a processor installed. That is useful if a board needs a newer BIOS to recognise a newer chip. Aura Sync is listed for controlling compatible RGB lighting.

Who it suits

It suits people building or upgrading a desktop around a Ryzen 7000 processor who want a full-size ATX board with current memory and storage standards. It is a DIY part rather than a ready-made computer, so it needs a processor, memory, storage, a power supply and a case. At about 12 x 9.6 inches (30.5 x 24.4 cm), it is a standard ATX size.

What to check before you buy

  • Processor: confirm it is an AM5 chip, and check the ASUS compatibility list for your exact model and the BIOS version required.
  • Memory: DDR5 only; check the supported speeds and capacity in the manual.
  • Case: an ATX case is the safest match, though many larger cases take it.
  • Storage: count the M.2 slots and SATA ports you need.
  • Wi-Fi: the listing mentions wired Ethernet only, so check whether you need a wireless card.
  • Graphics: a separate graphics card is needed if your processor has no integrated graphics.

The short version

  • ATX motherboard for AMD AM5 and Ryzen 7000 Series desktop processors, with DDR5 memory.
  • PCIe 5.0 M.2 support, SATA 6 Gbps, 2.5Gb Ethernet, USB 3.2 and USB4 support.
  • VRM, M.2 and chipset heatsinks, with hybrid fan headers.
  • BIOS Flashback and Aura Sync.
  • A build component: it needs a compatible processor, DDR5 memory and other parts.
