The WORX WG928 is a combo kit of two cordless tools for routine lawn care: a 12-inch string trimmer that doubles as an edger, and a turbine leaf blower. Both run on the same 20V PowerShare batteries, so one set of batteries and one charger covers trimming, edging and the clean-up afterwards. Here's what each tool does and what the numbers mean.
The trimmer: trimming and edging
The string trimmer has a 12-inch (about 30 cm) cutting width, so each pass covers roughly a foot. Use it to cut grass around fences, trees and flower beds, where a mower can't reach.
To edge, you pivot the head so the line cuts vertically. That lets you run it along sidewalks, driveways, lawn borders and flower beds for a clean line between grass and hard surfaces, without a separate edger.
Command Feed: no bumping the head
Trimmer line wears down as it cuts. Many trimmers feed more line when you bump the head on the ground. The WG928 uses WORX's Command Feed system instead: you press a button and it gives you fresh line on demand, so you can keep cutting without bumping the head or stopping to pull line out by hand. One trimmer spool is included.
The blower: what 360 CFM and 75 MPH mean
Leaf blowers are described by two figures, and they measure different things:
- CFM (cubic feet per minute) is the volume of air the blower moves. More volume pushes a wider sweep of loose material, such as a scatter of clippings or dry leaves. WORX lists up to 360 CFM, about 10 cubic metres a minute.
- MPH is the speed of the air leaving the tube. Higher speed helps shift debris that's lying flat or caught in cracks. WORX lists up to 75 mph, about 120 km/h.
The turbine blower weighs 5.7 lb (about 2.6 kg) and is made for clearing grass clippings, dry leaves and debris from patios, walkways, decks and driveways. That makes it a clean-up tool for after mowing and edging; clearing a large lawn of heavy, wet autumn leaves is a bigger job than it's described for.
PowerShare: one battery family
The two 20V batteries belong to the WORX PowerShare system. They work across WORX 20V tools, and they can be combined to run WORX's 40V and 80V products, so the batteries in this kit can power more tools if you add to your collection later.
WORX doesn't give the battery capacity in amp-hours in the headline specs, so it's worth checking the battery label or the manual if run time matters to you. Run time on any cordless tool depends on the battery's capacity and how hard the tool works.
A typical routine, and who it suits
A common order of work is to mow first, then trim around fences, trees and beds, edge along paths and the driveway, and finally blow the clippings off the hard surfaces and back onto the lawn. With two batteries, you can run one tool while the other battery waits in reserve.
The kit suits homeowners with a lawn to keep tidy who would rather have one battery system than separate cords, fuel or chargers for each tool.
What to check before you buy
- Battery capacity and charging time: these aren't in the headline specs, so check them against the size of your yard.
- Spools: only one is included, so check that spares of the right type are easy for you to get.
- The jobs you have: the blower is made for clippings, dry leaves and debris on hard surfaces.
- Protection: eye and hearing protection are standard advice for trimmers and blowers; follow the manual.
- Local rules: some areas limit when leaf blowers can be used.
- Other tools: whether you own, or plan to add, WORX PowerShare tools.
