The Worx WG509 TRIVAC is an electric 3-in-1 yard tool. It blows leaves into piles, vacuums them up and shreds them into a collection bag, so a single tool can cover most autumn clean-up. It runs on a 12 amp motor, which means it needs a power outlet or extension cord.

Blower, vacuum and mulcher in one

Worx says the tool converts from blower to vacuum in moments without extra tools. In blower mode, it moves leaves and light debris along. In vacuum mode, leaves are pulled in and shredded by a metal impeller, then collected in the bag. Mulching reduces bulk, which means fewer trips to empty the bag.

What the airflow numbers mean

Worx rates the TRIVAC at up to 350 CFM of air volume and 210 MPH of air speed. CFM (cubic feet per minute) describes how much air moves, which helps with shifting piles of leaves. Air speed describes how fast the stream leaves the nozzle, which helps lift stuck or wet debris. Both are best-case figures from the brand.

Mulching with a metal impeller

The two-stage metal impeller shreds leaves, and Worx says it mulches 18 bags of leaves into one. Metal impellers are typically more durable than plastic ones when the tool picks up the odd twig. Mulched leaves also decompose faster if added to compost or garden beds.

Who it suits

A corded blower-vacuum generally fits a small to medium yard, a patio, a deck or a driveway where an outlet is within reach. It is a lighter-duty choice than a petrol backpack blower, and it starts without fuel, oil or a pull cord. Because it plugs in, it also avoids battery charging and runtime limits.

Speed control and reach

A variable speed control lets you adjust power, from gentle sweeping around plants to stronger blowing. The tube design is meant to reach into corners and under patio or lawn furniture.

The bag

The collection bag holds 1.2 bushels. It has a shoulder strap, so you can wear it as a satchel and work one-handed. Worx lists the kit as the blower and the collection bag. The listing gives the tool's size as 14.1 x 3.2 x 6.3 inches (about 36 x 8 x 16 cm) and its weight as 9.3 lb (4.2 kg).

What to check before you buy

  • Your outlet position and the length and amp capacity of the extension cord you would need. Thin cords can overheat on a 12 amp tool, so follow the manual's guidance on cord gauge.
  • The size of your yard. A corded tool limits your reach to the cord length.
  • Weight and comfort, since a 9.3 lb tool with a bag can tire you over long sessions.
  • Noise, and any local rules about leaf blower hours.
  • Whether replacement bags, impellers and other parts are available.
  • Hearing and eye protection, and the instructions in the manual.
