The WORX WG183 is a 40V cordless string trimmer with a 13-inch cutting head, made for trimming grass along fences, paths and garden beds without a gas engine or an extension cord. It runs on two 20V batteries, both included with a dual charger, and weighs 6.4 pounds with the batteries fitted. The same head also edges along walkways.

How 40V comes from two 20V batteries

The WG183 takes two 20V, 2.0Ah batteries at once. Tools built this way typically connect the two packs in series, which adds their voltages together to deliver 40V. Higher voltage generally means more power at the cutting head, which helps with thicker grass and weeds.

Amp-hours (Ah) describe battery capacity: more Ah usually means a longer run time. The listing doesn't give a run time, so it's worth thinking about the size of your yard and how long a typical trim takes.

Power Share batteries

The batteries are part of WORX Power Share, so they fit all WORX 20V and 40V tools, outdoor power equipment and lifestyle products. If you already own WORX tools, the same packs can move between them; if you don't, the kit is a starting point for that system, and extra tools can be added later without buying into a new battery platform.

The cutting head

The 13-inch (about 33 cm) cutting head sets the width of grass cut in one pass. It's a dual-exit head: line comes out of two sides, which WORX says makes cutting more efficient, since two strands strike the grass on each turn instead of one.

Line feeding is handled two ways:

  • an automatic-feed spool advances the line as you work;
  • a push-button command feed gives you more line on demand.

Together they mean less stopping to bump the head or pull out line by hand.

Trimming and edging

Besides trimming, the head can be used for in-line edging, where the line runs vertically along the edge of a path or walkway to give a tidier border. Doing both jobs with one tool saves switching equipment for routine edging around the yard.

Weight and handling

With both batteries fitted, the WG183 weighs 6.4 pounds (about 2.9 kg). WORX describes the design as lightweight and streamlined, for easy manoeuvring and less fatigue, and the light frame makes it easier to reach awkward angles such as the grass closest to a fence. The auxiliary handle adjusts, so you can set a comfortable grip. The listed length is about 63 inches (160 cm).

What's in the box

  • the WG183 grass trimmer;
  • a spool (WA0007);
  • two 20V 2.0Ah batteries (WA3575);
  • a 2.0A dual charger (WA3770).

Those part numbers are useful later when looking for a replacement spool or extra batteries.

What to check before you buy

  • Run time: not listed; consider whether a larger yard would call for spare batteries.
  • Charge time: check how long the dual charger takes to refill both packs.
  • Fit: about 63 inches long; check the handle adjustment suits your height.
  • Line: which line diameter the spool takes and how easy replacement spools are to find.
  • Safety gear: follow the manual's advice on eye protection and sturdy footwear, as with any string trimmer.
