The VEVOR XDB-436B2 is a rotating compost bin with two chambers and a combined capacity of 43 gallons (about 162.7 litres). It sits on a steel frame and turns end over end, so you mix kitchen and garden waste by rolling the drum instead of forking over a heap. It is meant for gardeners who want finished compost without much manual turning.
Why two chambers
Compost needs time. Fresh scraps added to a batch that is already breaking down can slow it. With two chambers, you can let one batch mature while you fill the other. VEVOR says this reduces overall composting time and allows continuous composting. Each chamber holds roughly half the total capacity, so the figure of 43 gallons is shared between them. VEVOR lists a tolerance of -10% to +5% on that volume.
Tumbling and airflow
The 360° tumble design lets you roll the drum to mix the contents. Mixing moves material from the edges into the middle and lets air reach it, which generally speeds decomposition. VEVOR says to roll it every few days and that compost can be ready in 4 to 6 weeks. Actual times depend on what you add, the weather and the balance of green and brown material.
Vents are placed around the drum to let air in, and internal grooves help break up clumps as it turns. A typical mix combines nitrogen-rich scraps with carbon-rich dry leaves or shredded paper, and a damp-sponge level of moisture usually works well.
Materials and build
The body is polypropylene (PP) with a Q235B steel frame. VEVOR describes the plastic as BPA-free, UV-resistant and weatherproof, and says it is made for direct sun, rain and snow. The listed maximum load is 110 lb (50 kg). The unit itself weighs 21.9 lb (9.92 kg), and its dimensions are 29 x 24.6 x 37.6 inches (735 x 625 x 955 mm).
Doors and pest resistance
Each chamber has a detachable sliding door with a large opening, which makes it easier to add scraps and to take out finished compost. VEVOR says a secure seal keeps out mice and insects. A closed drum on a raised frame is generally harder for pests to reach than an open heap, though what you put in matters too.
Assembly and what is in the box
This is a self-assembly product. The package includes the composter components, one pair of gloves, 60 M4x12 pan head screws, two M5x55 screws, 60 M4 flange nuts, two M5 nuts, two pipe end caps, a Phillips screwdriver and the manual. With that many small fasteners, set aside some time and a clear work surface.
What to check before you buy
- Measure the spot: you need floor space of about 29 by 25 inches plus room to rotate the drum.
- Choose firm, level ground, since a full drum is heavy.
- Check that you can lift or roll a full chamber within the 110 lb load limit.
- Decide where finished compost will go, and whether you want a wheelbarrow beside it.
- Read the manual for guidance on what to add and what to avoid, such as meat and dairy.
