The VEVOR RA350300 is a manual retractable awning that mounts to a wall and unrolls to shade a patio, balcony or shopfront. At 12 x 10 ft (about 3.7 x 3 m) it covers a space large enough for a table and chairs. A hand crank opens and closes it, so it needs no electrical connection.

The canopy fabric

The canopy is 280 g polyester with a water-resistant PU coating. VEVOR gives it UV80+ protection and describes the colour as fade-resistant. A UV figure of that kind refers to how much sunlight the fabric blocks, though no fabric blocks all of it. A PU coating makes water bead and run off. It is meant for light showers, not for pooling water, and retracting the awning in heavy rain is the usual advice.

Frame and wind resistance

The frame is reinforced steel with screw connections, and the support bars are thick aluminium. The brand says the awning resists wind up to level 4, which on the Beaufort scale is a moderate breeze. Awnings of any kind are poor in strong gusts, and VEVOR itself suggests retracting this one in stormy weather.

Adjusting the angle

Turning the hand crank changes the angle between 40° and 90°. A steeper angle gives more cover against a low sun, while a flatter one shades the area under it at midday. Because the crank is manual, the awning can be adjusted or retracted during a power outage and has no motor to maintain.

Installing it

The listing recommends three people and basic tools. The mounting height should be between 8 and 12 ft, and all hardware and a manual are included. The brand says it is best fixed to brick or concrete walls, and for other surfaces suggests asking a professional. A power drill, tape measure and wrench are needed, and they are not included.

Where it suits

VEVOR names patios, gardens, balconies, cafés, restaurants and shops. It works over a patio door or a window where you want shade on the wall side of a space. The 144 in width and 120 in projection in the listing's dimensions fit the 12 x 10 ft description.

What to check before you buy

  • Wall construction: check what your wall is made of and whether it can carry the awning. If you're unsure, ask a professional.
  • Mounting height: measure to confirm that 8 to 12 ft above the ground is achievable at the spot you have in mind.
  • Space: allow for 10 ft of projection and 12 ft of width, and check for lights, gutters or trees in the way.
  • Local rules: if you rent, live in a condominium or use it at a business, check whether you need permission.
  • Helpers and tools: plan for three people and the tools above on installation day.
  • Weather: be ready to retract it in strong wind or heavy rain, and check the manual on cleaning the fabric.
