The VEVOR RA300250 is a manual retractable awning that measures 10 x 8 feet (about 3 x 2.4 m). It mounts to a wall and unrolls to cast shade over a patio, door, window or balcony, then winds back when it isn't needed. A crank handle does the work, so there is no motor or wiring to set up.
The canopy fabric
VEVOR describes the canopy as 280 g polyester with a waterproof polyurethane (PU) coating and a UV80+ protection class. The weight figure refers to the fabric's density, and heavier fabrics generally feel sturdier. A PU coating makes the surface water-resistant, so it sheds light rain, and a UV class describes how much of the sun's ultraviolet light the fabric blocks. VEVOR says the canopy is colourfast, meaning it is made to resist fading.
Water-resistant doesn't mean it will hold a pool of water. Awnings shed rain best when they are tilted, so a steeper angle helps on wet days.
Frame and wind resistance
The frame uses steel tube supports, with screwed connections and a thickened aluminum top tube that VEVOR says keeps the fabric taut and prevents sagging. The brand rates wind resistance as up to level 4, which on the Beaufort scale is generally a moderate breeze. VEVOR also recommends retracting the awning during storms, which is standard advice for any awning, since wind can load the arms and the wall fixings.
Adjusting the angle
Turning the crank changes the awning's angle between 40° and 90°. A lower angle catches the sun when it is high overhead, while a steeper one blocks the low sun in the morning or evening and helps with runoff in the rain. Because the crank is manual, you can set the angle by hand without any power supply.
Installing it
Installation is the part to plan for. VEVOR says assembly takes three people, and recommends mounting at a height of 8 to 12 feet (about 2.4 to 3.7 m). It also recommends a concrete or large brick wall, and notes that professional advice may be needed depending on your wall type. A manual and installation hardware are included. You'll need a drill with drill bits, a tape measure and a wrench, which aren't in the box.
The awning weighs 49.6 lb (about 22.5 kg), and the listed packed dimensions are 120 x 96 x 59 inches. Walls differ widely, such as siding, hollow block or insulated cladding, so check what your wall can support and follow the manual.
Where it is used
VEVOR says it suits both homes and businesses: yards, gardens, balconies and windows, as well as restaurants, cafés, markets and warehouses.
Who it suits
It suits anyone who wants adjustable shade over a deck, patio or entrance and prefers to be able to retract it when the weather turns or when they want full sun. It is less suitable where the wall is weak or where there is no firm, level place to mount it.
What to check before you buy
- Wall type and strength: confirm the surface you will drill into, and consider professional advice.
- Mounting height: measure to check that the 8 to 12 foot range works for your space.
- Coverage: check the 10 x 8 ft size against the area you want shaded.
- Clearance: make sure nothing blocks the arms as they extend or retract.
- Helpers and tools: plan for three people and the tools that aren't included.
- Local rules: if you rent or live under a homeowners' association, check whether you need permission.
