The VEVOR GT02 is a push-style drum spreader for spreading compost, peat moss, grass seed and similar material over a lawn or garden bed. It is a roller drum, 24 inches wide, that is filled and then pushed across the area to be covered.

How a drum spreader works

Material goes into a hollow drum that is perforated with mesh. As the drum rolls, the contents sift through the openings and fall to the ground in a fairly even layer. Unlike a broadcast spreader that throws granules outward, a drum spreader lays material directly beneath its width, so the strip it covers is the same as the drum width: here, 24 inches (about 61 cm).

Capacity and mesh

The drum holds up to 2.66 cubic feet (about 75 litres), according to VEVOR, so fewer refills are needed on larger areas. The mesh openings are 12 x 20 mm (about 0.47 x 0.79 inch). The rate of flow depends on how large and dry the material is, so test on a small patch first. Damp or clumpy compost may need screening or breaking up before it is loaded.

VEVOR describes the overall drum size as 60 x 40 cm in diameter and says it suits both lawns and larger farm plots.

Handle and control

The T-shaped, straight-bar handle has three height settings: 42.91 in (109 cm), 44.88 in (114 cm) and 48.03 in (122 cm). A handle that matches the user's height keeps the back straighter. VEVOR says the straight bar gives better control of direction and speed.

Build

The drum is integrated steel made with precision cutting, VEVOR says. The 25 mm (0.98 inch) handle is powder-coated for durability and rust resistance. Garden tools used with compost and moisture are exposed to rust, so rinse and dry it after use.

Assembly

Self-assembly is required, and the listing says the tools are included and recommends two people. The assembled spreader measures about 47.2 x 27.2 x 16.1 inches (roughly 120 x 69 x 41 cm) and weighs 23.2 lb (about 10.5 kg) empty. A full drum weighs considerably more, so think about the ground you will push it over.

Who it suits

It suits homeowners topdressing lawns with compost, spreading peat moss over seed, or overseeding. It also suits small-scale growers who need to cover long strips quickly.

What to check before you buy

  • Material: check that your seed, compost or peat is dry and fine enough for a 12 x 20 mm mesh.
  • Ground: a heavy drum is harder to push on soft or sloped ground.
  • Storage: the frame is about 47 inches long, so plan where it will be kept.
  • Product directions: follow the label rates for fertilizer or seed and wear what the label suggests.
  • Upkeep: clean off residue after each use.
