The VANSWE RB2518 is a recumbent exercise bike for use at home. Instead of sitting upright over the pedals, the rider reclines against a backrest, which many people find comfortable for longer sessions. VANSWE designed it with a step-through frame, quiet magnetic resistance and Bluetooth connectivity. Here is what those features mean.

Recumbent design and the step-through frame

On a recumbent bike the seat is low and the pedals are out in front. The low-profile step-through frame means there is no high bar to swing a leg over, which is why this layout is often chosen by people who want easy mounting and a low-impact workout. VANSWE markets this bike for seniors and for use at home alongside physical therapy, but anyone with a health concern should check with their own professional first.

Frame and weight capacity

The bike has a reinforced steel frame and a listed weight capacity of 380 lb (about 172 kg). VANSWE says the frame is built to stay steady while riding. The bike itself weighs 53 lb (about 24 kg) and measures about 47 x 22 x 41 inches (119 x 56 x 104 cm).

16-level magnetic resistance

Magnetic resistance uses magnets near the flywheel to create drag, with no pad rubbing against it. This is typically smooth and quiet, and it needs little maintenance. VANSWE uses neodymium magnets and offers 16 levels, which it contrasts with the 8 levels common on standard models. Turning the resistance knob changes the effort, from gentle pedalling to harder cardio, and VANSWE says the quiet operation suits riding while the television is on or while reading.

Seat and backrest

The seat slides along a rail with no fixed notches, so the position can be set finely. VANSWE gives a fit range of 5'1" to 6'1" (about 155 to 185 cm). Setting the seat so the knee is slightly bent at the far end of the pedal stroke is the usual advice. The padded seat is 15 inches wide, and there is a vented ergonomic backrest for lumbar support.

Monitor and Bluetooth

A backlit LED monitor shows time, speed, distance, calories and heart rate. These are estimates and not clinical measurements. The bike also connects over Bluetooth to free fitness apps, and VANSWE says it is compatible with Kinomap and Zwift for virtual rides.

Assembly and moving it

VANSWE says the bike arrives about 80% pre-assembled and that setup takes 30 to 60 minutes, with instructions and tools supplied. Front transport wheels let you tilt and roll it from room to room.

Who it suits

It suits people who want a seated, low-impact way to pedal indoors, taller and larger riders who need a high weight limit, and households with limited space who want something that can be rolled away.

What to check before you buy

  • Rider height: the seat adjusts for 5'1" to 6'1"; confirm that your inseam fits that range.
  • Space: measure the room for a footprint of about 47 x 22 inches, plus space to get on and off.
  • App needs: check which phone or tablet works with the Bluetooth apps you intend to use.
  • Floor: put the bike on a flat, stable surface and use a mat if needed.
  • Health: if you have a medical condition, ask your own professional before starting a new routine.
  • Assembly: check the instructions and have a helper for lifting.
