The SENIX 4QL (model BL4QL-L) is a handheld gas leaf blower built around a 26.5cc four-cycle engine. It is meant for clearing leaves and debris from yards, sidewalks and driveways without a power cord or a battery to recharge. Its main twist is that gas and oil go in separate tanks, so there is no fuel to premix. Here is what the specs mean in practice.
Airflow and air speed: 410 CFM and 125 MPH
Blowers are usually described by two numbers. CFM (cubic feet per minute) is the volume of air the blower moves, and it decides how big a pile of leaves you can push at once. MPH is the speed of the air leaving the tube, which helps lift leaves that are stuck to the ground or caught in grass. SENIX lists the 4QL at up to 410 CFM and up to 125 MPH.
Both figures are maximums at full throttle. In everyday use you will often run it at part throttle, which is quieter and uses less fuel.
How the 4QL engine differs from a two-stroke
Many small handheld gas tools use two-stroke engines, which need oil mixed into the gas at a set ratio. Four-cycle engines keep the oil separate, which is why the 4QL has its own gas tank and oil tank. The brand's spec table lists them at 9.5 fl oz and 2 fl oz respectively.
Four-cycle engines in small tools can struggle with lubrication when tilted. SENIX says its patented 4QL design keeps the engine lubricated in any direction, without stalls or oil leaks, so you can angle the blower freely. The engine uses a full crank, which SENIX says keeps vibration low, and the brand describes the 4QL technology as low in emissions and fuel consumption.
Starting, handling and the tube
Automatic compression release reduces the effort needed on the starter rope, which makes pull-starting easier. A dual grip handle lets you steady the blower with a second hand and makes it easier to control. The tube is detachable, and the brand's images show it used both short, for close work around steps and beds, and long, for more reach across open ground. With the long tube fitted, the blower measures about 36.6 inches (93 cm) long, and the listed weight is 9.5 lb (about 4.3 kg).
What's in the box and the warranty
The blower comes with a Torx wrench, a spark plug wrench and a 2 oz bottle of engine oil. SENIX lists a three-year limited warranty. Note that the blower is not available in California.
Using a gas blower sensibly
As with any gas-powered tool, read the manual before the first start, especially the sections on adding oil, fuelling and storage. Standard advice for gas blowers is to refuel with the engine off and cool, wear eye and hearing protection, and keep people and pets clear of the air stream. Some towns also limit when or where gas blowers may be used, so check local rules.
Who it suits
It suits homeowners with a yard, driveway or long paths who want cordless reach without battery run-time limits, and who would rather not premix fuel. People with only a small patio or balcony may find a gas blower more than they need.
What to check before you buy
- Local rules: check whether gas blowers are restricted in your area, and note it isn't available in California.
- Weight and handling: about 9.5 lb is carried in one hand, with a second hand on the grip.
- Upkeep: a four-cycle engine needs oil checks and changes, and a spark plug now and then.
- Fuel storage: you'll need a safe place to keep a gas can.
- Noise: gas blowers are loud; think about neighbours and hearing protection.
