The Purewell PWPF-01 is a hand-operated water filter pump for camping, hiking, backpacking and emergency kits. It needs no electricity: you place the intake tube in a water source, pump, and filtered water comes out of the other end. Here is what the specs mean and what to check before packing it.
How the four stages work
Purewell describes a four-stage filter. Stage one is a hollow fibre ultrafiltration membrane. Stage two is activated carbon fibre. Stage three is a coconut shell activated carbon rod, and stage four is PP cotton, a pre-filter that catches larger particles. In general, a pre-filter takes out sediment first so the finer stages clog more slowly, and activated carbon is typically used to reduce taste and odour.
What 0.01 micron means
A micron is a thousandth of a millimetre. Purewell lists the membrane at 0.01 micron and says it can reduce up to 99.9999% of tiny material. In general, a smaller pore size stops smaller particles, but filtration claims differ between products and testing standards. Read the manual to see exactly what the filter is designed to remove, and what it is not, before you rely on it for anything beyond the manufacturer's stated use.
Flow rate and filter life
The listed flow rate is up to 1,400 ml (58 oz) per minute. Purewell says the reusable carbon filter can process up to 793 gallons (3,000 L) before it needs replacing, and notes that life depends on water quality. Cloudy water clogs a filter faster, so using the clearest source available typically extends its life. The brand also says several people can use one unit at the same time.
Design and what is in the box
The pump has rubber on the sides and base to keep it steady while pumping, and the shell is made of food-grade materials, according to Purewell. The handle has a diameter of up to 15 mm. The transparent lid doubles as a drinking cup, and there is a compass on top. The listed size is 6.69 x 3.14 x 1.96 inches and the weight is about 1 lb (roughly 0.45 kg). The box includes an instruction manual, tubing, a hose clip, the filtering system and a carry bag.
Who it suits
It suits hikers, campers and travellers who want a pump-style filter that can also sit in an emergency kit, and it works with rain, lake and river water as the brand describes. A pump is a good fit for groups because it filters on demand. It is heavier and bulkier than a squeeze-style or straw filter, so ultralight backpackers may weigh that up.
What to check before you buy
- Intended use: read what the manufacturer says the filter removes and what it does not, especially for very polluted or chemically affected water.
- Upkeep: check how to clean, pack away and dry the filter, and how to tell when the carbon filter should be replaced.
- Spare parts: see whether replacement filters are available for your model.
- Weight and size: about 1 lb plus the tubing and bag, which may matter on long trips.
- Cold weather: check the manual for guidance on freezing, since wet filters can be damaged.
