The MIXC raised garden bed is a wooden planter box on legs, built so that you can tend plants at waist height. It suits a patio, deck or balcony, where a conventional in-ground bed isn't an option, and it is sized for flowers, herbs and vegetables.

Size and growing space

MIXC gives the dimensions as 48 inches long, about 24 inches wide and 31 inches high. The planting area is 9 inches deep and holds 5 to 6 cubic feet of soil, according to the brand. That depth is workable for lettuce, herbs, radishes, strawberries and many flowers. Deep-rooted crops such as full-size carrots or tomatoes tend to want more room, so match your plants to the depth.

Wood and construction

MIXC says the box is made of untreated fir, which it says resists warping and splitting better than cedar, with the supporting parts in Pinus radiata for load-bearing strength. Untreated wood is often preferred for edible plants because no preservatives are involved, though it naturally weathers over time.

The brand describes a column-and-beam structure that it says is stronger than a dovetail joint, and rates the bed for 331 lbs of soil and plants. The legs are coated with waterproof paint to guard against rot, and MIXC quotes a service life of up to three years outdoors. As with any wooden outdoor furniture, positioning, rain exposure and upkeep influence how long it lasts.

Drainage and the liner

There are four drainage holes to release excess water. A waterproof PE liner is included for you to fit yourself; it helps keep soil and moisture away from the wood. MIXC points out that the liner is itself waterproof, so if you want drainage to keep working you should, after filling with soil, poke through the liner at each drainage hole with a sharp tool. Without that step, water may collect in the bed.

Why the height matters

At 31 inches, the bed lifts the planting surface so you don't have to bend or kneel while weeding, planting and watering. MIXC also says the elevated design deters pests, rodents and wild animals, which is a reasonable expectation for ground-dwelling visitors, though it won't stop flying insects or determined climbers.

Putting it together

The kit includes an installation guide and a screwdriver. MIXC recommends two people and estimates 20 to 35 minutes, and suggests wearing gloves because wood parts can have rough edges.

Who it suits

  • Gardeners with limited space, such as a balcony or small patio.
  • People who prefer to work at a comfortable height.
  • Anyone starting a small herb or salad garden.

What to check before you buy

  • Footprint: measure your balcony or patio for a 48 x 24-inch base and room to walk around it.
  • Weight: a full bed is heavy. Check that your deck or balcony can carry the load, up to the listed 331 lbs.
  • Soil volume: 5 to 6 cubic feet means buying enough soil or compost to fill it.
  • Plant depth: confirm that 9 inches suits the plants you want.
  • Drainage: plan to open the liner at the drainage holes.
  • Upkeep: untreated wood may need sealing or a sheltered position to last.
