The MIXC landscape edging kit is a flexible border system for separating lawn from flower beds, paths and gravel. It comes as three rolls of edging, 66 feet each, plus 300 metal spikes to hold it in the ground. The idea is a single package that covers a long run of garden border without extra purchases for fixings.

What is in the kit

MIXC lists three rolls of edging at 66 feet each, which adds up to roughly 200 feet (about 60 metres). The edging stands 1.5 inches tall. Because it arrives as three shorter rolls rather than one long, heavy coil, MIXC says you can plan a layout in sections instead of unrolling and cutting a single large length. The whole kit is listed at about 22 pounds (10 kg).

The 300 spikes are U-shaped iron nails, 5.9 inches (15 cm) long and 1.2 inches (3.05 cm) wide, made from 11-gauge, 3 mm steel wire. MIXC contrasts them with plastic stakes, which it describes as too soft for hard ground and prone to bending or breaking.

The material and what it means for outdoor use

The edging is high-density polyethylene (HDPE). HDPE is a common outdoor plastic that is tough, doesn't absorb water and tends to cope with sun and temperature swings better than many plastics. MIXC says its version resists UV damage, extreme temperatures and pressure, and quotes 3 to 5 years of use without cracking or breaking. As with any outdoor product, real lifespan depends on climate, sun exposure and how it is installed.

Installing it

The edging is flexible, so it bends into gentle curves around beds, trees and uneven ground. MIXC says the pre-drilled holes and included spikes allow a single person to install it, and that no trenching or excavation is needed. You lay the edging along the line you want, then push a spike through each hole into the soil.

The listing adds a useful caution: the kit suits relatively soft ground, and very hard ground is not conducive to nailing. If your soil is compacted clay, stony or frozen, expect to need a mallet at the least, and perhaps to loosen or dampen the soil first.

Where it is used

MIXC suggests home gardens, farms, slopes, cafes and parks. The listed uses include:

  • dividing a lawn from a planting bed;
  • edging a sidewalk or path;
  • erosion control on slopes, where the edge helps hold soil in place;
  • marking off a garden area as a barrier;
  • keeping apart areas with different soil, which the brand mentions in connection with acid soil management.

What 1.5 inches of height does

A low edge like this is a visual and physical boundary. It tends to hold mulch, gravel or soil in place and gives mowers and trimmers a clear line to follow. It will not stop determined roots or tall spreading plants the way a deep root barrier would. For raised retaining of soil on a steep slope, a taller or sturdier structure may be needed.

What to check before you buy

  • Total length: measure the border you want to edge, including curves, and compare it with about 200 feet. Remember that overlaps at joins use up some length.
  • Height: confirm that 1.5 inches is enough for the job you have in mind.
  • Ground: check how hard your soil is, since the brand recommends relatively soft land for driving the spikes.
  • Tools: a rubber mallet and a pair of scissors or a utility knife for trimming may make installation easier.
  • Spike count: 300 spikes over roughly 200 feet leaves a little spare for replacements, but check your layout if you want closer spacing.
  • Look and colour: confirm the finish suits your garden.

The short version

  • Three 66-foot HDPE edging rolls, about 200 feet in total, 1.5 inches tall.
  • 300 U-shaped iron spikes, 5.9 inches long, are included.
  • Bends into curves; MIXC says one person can install it without digging.
  • Rated by MIXC at 3 to 5 years outdoors.
  • Best suited to relatively soft ground, as the listing itself notes.
