The Electactic JD-4B is a full-size propane grill with four main burners, a side burner and a stainless steel body from top to bottom. It is built for patios and backyards where you regularly cook for family or friends. Here is what its numbers mean and what to check before setting one up.
What 42,000 BTU means
BTU figures on a gas grill describe how much gas the burners can burn per hour, so they measure heat input rather than cooking results. On this grill, each of the four stainless steel main burners is rated at 8,000 BTU and the side burner at 10,000 BTU, for 42,000 BTU in total.
A commonly quoted guide is to divide the main burners' output by the main cooking area. Here, that's 32,000 BTU over 383 square inches, roughly 84 BTU per square inch, which sits within the range usually considered plenty for searing and everyday grilling. Lid design, grate material and wind all affect real-world heat too.
Four separately controlled burners also make zone cooking easy: run one side high for searing and keep the other low or off for slower, indirect cooking.
Cooking space and grates
Electactic lists 383 square inches (about 2,470 cm²) of grilling area across three porcelain-enameled grates, plus a 141-square-inch warming rack above them for keeping finished food hot or toasting buns. A side burner rack adds space beside the main grill.
Porcelain enamel is smooth, so food releases easily and the grates wipe clean. Like any enamel, it can chip if knocked or scraped hard, so a brush made for coated grates is a sensible choice.
The side burner
The 10,000 BTU side burner works like a hob next to the grill. It is meant for sauces, vegetables and side dishes, or keeping something warm, so you don't need to go back to the kitchen while the main grill is busy.
Lid and thermometer
The double-wall lid is designed to hold heat in, which helps when cooking with the lid down and in breezy weather. The large built-in thermometer reads from 0 to 1000°F, so you can check the temperature without opening the lid. Lid thermometers measure the air under the dome, which can differ from the temperature right at the grates, so treat the reading as a guide.
Stainless steel build
According to Electactic, every panel, shelf and structural component is stainless steel, including the main body, side shelves, front door and the double-layer lid, with no painted or coated surfaces. Stainless steel resists corrosion well, but it can still show marks and discolouration outdoors; regular cleaning and a cover help it keep its finish.
The grill measures about 51 inches wide, 22.4 inches deep and 43.7 inches high (roughly 130 x 57 x 111 cm). It stands on casters, and the cabinet has a flush door with concealed handles. The side table has built-in hooks for tongs and spatulas, and a corrugated hose connects the gas supply.
Grease and cleaning
A rear-sloping grease tray and a removable drip cup direct fat away from the burners. Emptying the cup and cleaning the tray regularly matters on any gas grill, because built-up grease is a common cause of flare-ups.
Who it suits
It suits households that grill often and cook for groups, from weeknight meals to weekend gatherings, and people who want a side burner and a warming rack so the whole meal can be cooked outside.
What to check before you buy
- Space: allow for the 51-inch width plus the clearances from walls, railings and overhangs that the manual specifies.
- Local rules: some buildings and areas restrict gas grills on balconies; check before you buy for an apartment.
- Gas supply: confirm what you need to connect it, including a propane cylinder.
- Assembly: set aside time to build it, and follow the manual for gas connections, including a leak check with soapy water.
- Cover: a fitted cover helps protect stainless steel between uses.
