The ZAFRO A9092R-10K is a portable air conditioner that uses an inverter compressor and a dual-hose design. It is aimed at rooms where a window or split system isn't practical, and it adds a self-evaporating drainage system, app control and a sleep mode.

14,000 BTU and 10,000 BTU SACC

Two numbers appear in the name. The 14,000 BTU figure is the older measurement method. SACC, the seasonally adjusted cooling capacity, is the more conservative figure used on North American efficiency labels, and here it is 10,000 BTU. When comparing units, compare like with like. As a rough guide, the size of the room, ceiling height, sun exposure and heat from appliances all affect how much capacity is needed, so check the manual's room-size guidance.

What an inverter does

A conventional compressor switches fully on and off. An inverter varies its speed, so it can hold a temperature more steadily with fewer starts and stops. ZAFRO says this precise frequency control reduces on-off cycles and gives a CEER of 12.8, compared with a standard it quotes as 7.83. CEER is the combined energy efficiency ratio, where higher is more efficient.

Dual hoses

Single-hose units pull room air to cool the condenser and push it outside, which can draw warm air in through gaps. A dual-hose design takes in outside air for the condenser through one hose and exhausts it through the other. ZAFRO lists airflow of 480 cubic meters per hour and an Extra mode that sets 61°F and runs at full power for fast cooling.

Drainage

The self-evaporating system collects moisture and throws it onto the condenser with a water-slinging wheel, where it evaporates. ZAFRO says that in humidity below 90% the unit can run 72 hours without manual draining, and a drain hose is supplied for very humid conditions.

Noise, modes and controls

ZAFRO says the unit operates at as low as 42 decibels, and Sleep mode adjusts compressor frequency and fan speed to hold a stable temperature quietly. Six modes are listed: Cool, Dry, Fan, Sleep, Extra and Eco. There is a 24-hour timer, four-way oscillation, a remote and an app for scheduling and control, plus ambient lighting, power-off memory and filter-clean reminders.

Size and weight

It measures about 14.3 x 16.5 x 27.2 inches and weighs 54 lb (about 24.5 kg). Portable units are bulky, so think about where it will stand and how you will move it.

Who it suits

It suits bedrooms, home offices and rentals where a permanent installation isn't allowed, and people who want a quieter sleeping setup with scheduling from a phone.

What to check before you buy

  • Room size: compare your room with the manual's guidance for the SACC figure.
  • Window kit: check that the hoses and window adapter fit your window type.
  • Hose routing: the dual hoses need space and a path to the window.
  • Power: confirm the outlet and circuit suit the unit.
  • Humidity: in very humid rooms you may need the drain hose.
  • Upkeep: clean filters as the reminders and manual advise.

The short version

  • A dual-hose inverter portable air conditioner, rated 14,000 BTU and 10,000 BTU SACC.
  • CEER of 12.8 as stated by ZAFRO, with airflow of 480 cubic meters per hour.
  • Self-evaporating drainage, with a drain hose for very humid rooms.
  • Six modes, 24-hour timer, remote and app control; as low as 42 dB.
  • About 54 lb, so plan where it will sit.
