The ZAFRO CM8054 is a compact semi-automatic espresso machine with a steam wand for frothing milk. It is meant for people who want to make espresso, lattes and cappuccinos at home or in a small office, and who are happy to take a hands-on role in the process.
What semi-automatic means
On a semi-automatic machine, a pump pushes hot water through ground coffee in a portafilter, and you control when the shot starts and stops. You grind, dose and tamp the coffee yourself. This gives more control than a capsule machine but depends on your technique and on how fresh and finely ground the coffee is. ZAFRO says you can pull single or double shots with a layer of crema.
What 20 bar means
ZAFRO describes a 20-bar professional Italian pump. Bars measure pump pressure. Espresso is traditionally extracted at around 9 bar at the coffee, so a higher pump figure is mostly a maximum, not what reaches the grounds. Grind, dose and tamping usually matter more for taste. A built-in pressure gauge shows pressure while you brew, so you can adjust to your preference.
Milk frothing
The steam wand textures milk for lattes, cappuccinos and flat whites. ZAFRO says it makes creamy microfoam, suitable for milk art. Steaming takes practice: the usual approach is to keep the wand tip just under the milk surface to add air, then lower it to swirl and heat. Wipe and purge the wand after each use.
Water tank and size
The tank holds 45 oz (about 1.3 litres) and is removable for easy filling, so several drinks can be made before a refill. The machine measures about 14.2 x 8.9 x 13.6 inches, and ZAFRO says the stainless steel look and compact design suit kitchens of any size. Check height under cabinets, especially as you will need room to remove the tank and use the portafilter.
Cleaning and care
Rinse the portafilter and basket after each shot, wipe the steam wand, and empty the drip tray. Descaling at the interval in the manual helps protect heating parts, particularly in hard-water areas. The steam wand and hot water are hot, so follow the manual's safety notes.
Who it suits
It suits home baristas getting started, small offices, and people who want milk drinks from a small machine. Those who want push-button convenience may prefer a capsule or super-automatic machine. ZAFRO also markets it as a gift.
