The VEVOR SFC18100S is an electric percolator, a stainless steel pot that brews coffee by cycling hot water up through the grounds. It makes up to 12 cups at a time, which suits gatherings, offices and anyone who wants a large pot kept warm.
How a percolator brews
In a percolator, water heats in the base of the pot and rises through a tube, then drips over the coffee basket and back into the pot. The cycle repeats while it heats. This tends to give a strong, hot cup. Because the water passes through the grounds several times, a medium to coarse grind generally works better than a fine one.
VEVOR gives three tips: a grind that is too coarse, too little coffee, or grounds that aren't packed firmly can leave too little pressure for a proper brew. It also says a paper filter disc is needed for fine grounds.
Capacity and markings
The pot holds 1.8 L, which VEVOR counts as 12 cups of 5 oz each. That is a "coffee cup" measure, so it is smaller than a mug. Both the inner liner and the chamber have scale lines, so you can measure the water and coffee. The pot can also boil water.
1000W heating and keep-warm
A 1000W element is the brand's route to fast brewing. When brewing finishes, the pot switches to keep-warm automatically. If the liquid falls below 113°F (45°C), it reheats itself.
Split power base
The pot separates from its power base, so you can carry it to the table without dragging a cord. Treat the base like any electrical item: keep it dry and follow the manual.
304 stainless steel
The body, inner liner, spout, inner lid and chamber parts are 304 stainless steel, which VEVOR describes as food grade. 304 is a common stainless grade used in kitchen equipment. The lid presses on and comes apart from the body, for easier cleaning.
Size
It measures about 9.4 x 6.2 x 13.4 inches (24 x 15.7 x 34 cm) and weighs 2.6 lb (1.2 kg).
Who it suits
It suits people who like a traditional percolated cup, groups that need a lot of coffee at once, and campers or cabins with mains power.
What to check before you buy
- Brew style: percolator coffee tastes different from drip or pour-over, so confirm it's what you want.
- Grind: have a medium to coarse grind, or a paper filter disc.
- Counter space: check the height under your cupboards.
- Cleaning: read the manual on washing the parts and the base.
- Power: a 1000W appliance needs a suitable outlet.
