The VEVOR SH-002-SY is a five-piece junior drum kit in silver, made for children aged 6 to 13 who are learning to play. It comes with a drum throne, a bass drum pedal, cymbals and two pairs of drumsticks. It ships unassembled and must be put together by an adult. Here is what is in the kit and what to think about first.

The five drums

VEVOR lists these drums:

  • a 16 in bass drum with pedal;
  • a 10 in snare drum;
  • an 8 in tom-tom and a 10 in tom-tom;
  • a 13 in floor tom.

The shells are made from poplar wood, which VEVOR says gives warm, rich tones. The drumheads are thickened PET, described as built for energetic play with a crisp sound. The sizes are smaller than a full-size kit, which helps a child reach every piece.

Cymbals and hi-hat

The kit has a 10 in crash cymbal and a pair of 8 in hi-hat cymbals with a stand. The hi-hat is a pair of cymbals that open and close with a foot pedal, while the crash is struck for accents. Cymbals in kids' sets are typically small and light, so their sound is different from professional cymbals.

Throne and sticks

The drum throne has three height levels with a quick bolt-lock, so it can be adjusted as the child grows. There are two pairs of drumsticks: one sized for small hands and one for adults. That lets a parent or teacher play along.

What else is in the box

The package list includes hoops, spare drumheads, drum hooks, M6 screws in two lengths with spares, a snare stand, tom legs and stand, bass drum legs, cymbal rod and a drum key for tuning. Check the contents against the list when you unpack.

Size and weight

The packed kit is about 22 x 16.9 x 15 inches (56 x 43 x 38 cm) and weighs 35.3 lb (about 16 kg). Drums are loud and need floor space, so think about where the kit will live.

Certifications and warning

VEVOR lists CE and CPC certifications for the kit. It also warns that it contains small parts and isn't for children under 3 years old, and that an adult must assemble it. Follow the instructions and the manual.

Who it suits

It suits children from about 6 to 13 who want to try drumming, and families who want a complete starter kit rather than separate parts. VEVOR says the set can help develop hand-eye coordination. Teenagers and adults will find it smaller than a standard kit.

What to check before you buy

  • Age and size: confirm the drums and throne suit your child's height and arm reach.
  • Noise: consider neighbours and the room. Drums are loud, and practice pads or mutes can help.
  • Assembly: allow time for an adult to build the kit with the drum key.
  • Floor space: measure the area for the drums and the throne.
  • Tuning and upkeep: learn how to tighten the heads and cymbal fittings.
