The VEVOR 18.5 gal (70 L) distiller is a large stainless steel kit built around a boiler, a rectifying tower and a condensing coil. VEVOR markets it for fermenting and distilling, including making spirits such as whisky and brandy, as well as brewing seasonings like soy sauce and vinegar. Because of its size, it is aimed at serious hobbyists and small operations, not a casual countertop user.
How distillation works
The principle is simple. A fermented liquid is heated until the more volatile parts turn to vapour. The vapour rises, is cooled in a condenser and turns back into liquid, which is collected. Because different components boil at different temperatures, the process separates them.
The 70 L stainless steel pot
The pot holds 70 L (18.5 gal) and is made of 304 food-grade stainless steel, a common grade for food equipment that resists rust and is easy to clean. VEVOR says it can process about 17.5 kg of rice in one batch. The lid has been upgraded with a better seal and rust-proof welded joints, according to the brand.
Rectifying tower and ceramic balls
A pack of ceramic balls fills the rectifying tower. VEVOR says they filter out high-boiling impurities from the vapour so that only the higher-purity vapour reaches the condenser. VEVOR quotes outputs of 12.5 kg of 50% alcohol by volume, or 17.5 kg at 30%. Those figures are the brand's, and results vary with the starting material and how the run is managed.
Condensing coil and water pump
The condenser is a stainless steel coil with high thermal conductivity and a large contact area with the cooling water. VEVOR says this keeps the distilled output at a low temperature. A circulating water pump is included to speed up the flow of coolant.
Accessories
The kit includes a thermometer (0 to 150°C / 32 to 302°F) for monitoring temperature, a one-way air valve that lets fermentation gas escape but not return (VEVOR says to fill it two-thirds with water), and a vinometer for measuring alcohol strength.
Heat sources
VEVOR says the pot works on gas stoves, coal stoves, coal gas and firewood. A large pot of boiling liquid and flammable vapour deserves respect: use it in a well-ventilated space, keep it away from open flames not under your control, and follow the manual closely.
Who it suits
It suits people who already have the knowledge and permission to ferment and distil in volume, and those making vinegar, soy sauce or other seasonings, or distilling water. Smaller households may find it larger than they need, at about 20 inches on each side.
What to check before you buy
- Local law: rules on distilling alcohol vary widely, and in many places a licence is required or home distilling is not allowed. Check yours first.
- Heat source: make sure your stove can support a large, heavy pot.
- Water supply: you'll need cooling water for the condenser and pump.
- Space: about 20 x 20 x 20 inches, plus room for hoses and the tower.
- Cleaning: read the instructions for cleaning every part after use.
- Model details: the listing gives few specs beyond those above, so confirm anything else with the manual.
