The TOPZEE TEM-420 is a compact semi-automatic espresso machine with a 20-bar pump, a steam wand for milk and a Cold Extract mode for iced coffee. Its stainless steel body has a slim footprint, so it fits on a small counter. Here is what its specs mean for everyday espresso, milk drinks and iced coffee.

What 20 bar and PID control mean

Espresso is made by forcing hot water through finely ground, tightly packed coffee. Pump pressure is quoted as a maximum: 20 bar is a common figure on home machines, while the pressure on the coffee during a shot is typically around 9 bar.

PID temperature control matters more from day to day. A PID controller adjusts the heater continuously to hold the water near a set temperature, which helps shots taste consistent from one to the next. The TEM-420 heats with 1350W, and TOPZEE says the combination extracts full-bodied flavour with crema.

Hot, Americano and iced coffee

The control panel has buttons for one or two cups, Americano and Cold Extract, and the cup size can be customized. An Americano is espresso topped up with hot water.

Cold Extract is TOPZEE's cold brew function: the brand says it makes iced coffee in seconds, whereas traditional cold brew steeps for many hours. The listing doesn't explain the process in detail, so think of it as a quick route to coffee over ice.

Steaming milk

The steam wand textures milk into microfoam, the fine, glossy foam used for lattes, cappuccinos and latte art, and it heats milk for hot chocolate too. TOPZEE shows the wand swivelling 360°, which makes it easier to position the jug. A stainless steel milk jug is included.

Size, water tank and upkeep

The machine measures about 12.5 x 6.1 x 12.4 inches (32 x 15.5 x 31.5 cm), so it takes up little counter width. The 52 oz (about 1.5 litre) water tank is removable, which makes refilling at the sink easier, and it holds enough for several drinks between refills.

The machine has auto shut-off, overheating protection and a cleaning reminder. Like any espresso machine, it needs the portafilter and steam wand rinsed after use and periodic descaling, more often with hard water.

What's in the box

A portafilter, stainless steel filter baskets for one and two cups, a stainless steel tamper, a milk jug and a coffee spoon. There's no built-in grinder, so you'll need coffee ground for espresso or a separate grinder.

Who it suits

It suits people new to espresso, small kitchens where counter width is limited, and households that switch between hot espresso drinks, Americanos and iced coffee.

What to check before you buy

  • Counter space: about 12.5 x 6.1 x 12.4 inches, plus room to lift out the tank.
  • Cup height: check that your cups or glasses fit under the spout.
  • Coffee: you'll need espresso-fine ground coffee or a grinder.
  • Upkeep: plan for regular cleaning and descaling.
  • Drinks: check that the one- and two-cup, Americano and Cold Extract options cover what you make.
