The Philips Avent SCD843/01 is a digital video baby monitor made of a camera unit for the nursery and a handheld parent unit. It connects directly between the two units and does not need Wi-Fi or an app. It adds a colour screen, night vision, two-way talk and a few soothing extras.
Screen, zoom and night vision
The parent unit has a 3.5-inch colour screen with 2x digital zoom and pan. Philips says infrared night vision switches on automatically in the dark, so you can see the cot without a light. A direct link between two units keeps the image on a screen you can carry, rather than on your phone.
A private connection without Wi-Fi
The monitor uses adaptive FHSS (Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum). This technique hops between frequencies to reduce interference, and Philips says the units pair uniquely for a private connection. Because it does not use your home network, it does not depend on internet access.
Range and battery
Philips gives the range as up to 300 metres outdoors and 50 metres indoors. Those are best-case figures; walls, floors and other electronics typically reduce indoor range. The rechargeable parent unit runs for up to 10 hours, which suits an overnight session, and an ECO mode switches off audio and video transmission until the baby makes a sound, with a link indicator confirming that the units stay connected.
Talk-back, lullabies and night light
Two-way talk lets you speak to your baby from another room. Five lullabies and a night light can be switched on from the parent unit. A vibration mode gives a quiet alert instead of sound, and you can adjust the microphone sensitivity to set what noise level triggers the unit.
Room temperature display
A built-in sensor shows the room temperature on the parent unit and can alert you if it moves outside the range you set. Use it as a guide alongside your own judgement and current guidance from your health provider.
Size
The unit is about 3.9 x 5.9 x 1.2 inches and weighs 1.2 lb.
Who it suits
It suits families who want a self-contained system without Wi-Fi, grandparents or carers who prefer a simple handheld screen, and homes where a phone app is not wanted.
What to check before you buy
- Layout: test the range in your own house, including through several walls.
- Camera placement: follow the manual on positioning, cords and distance from the cot.
- Battery: plan to charge the parent unit each day.
- Interference: other wireless devices nearby can affect signal.
- Not a replacement for supervision: a monitor supports, but never replaces, safe sleep practice and adult attention.
