The Philips 3200 Series EP3241/74 is a fully automatic, bean-to-cup espresso machine with the LatteGo milk system. It grinds beans, brews and froths milk at the touch of a button, and it can also make iced coffee. Here is what its main features mean and what to consider before you set one up.

What "fully automatic" means

A fully automatic (super-automatic) machine does the steps a barista does by hand. It grinds whole beans, doses and presses the grounds, brews, and then pours the drink. Philips says the machine makes iced coffee and up to five black and milk-based coffee varieties at the touch of a button. You supply beans, water and milk, and the machine handles the rest.

This convenience generally means a larger machine with an internal brew unit, which needs periodic rinsing and cleaning.

The touch display and My Coffee Choice

An intuitive touch display lets you pick a drink with one touch. Under the My Coffee Choice menu, Philips says you can adjust the strength and the quantity of each drink and choose from three different settings. It also describes an Aroma Extract system, which it says balances brewing temperature and aroma extraction. These settings let you tune a drink to your taste, so expect to experiment with bean type, grind and strength.

LatteGo milk system

LatteGo is Philips' milk frothing unit. It is a two-part jug that attaches to the front of the machine and froths milk into a layer for drinks such as cappuccino and latte macchiato. Philips says it produces a silky-smooth layer of froth. LatteGo's design typically has fewer parts than a milk-tube system, which makes it quicker to rinse; check the manual for the recommended cleaning routine.

AquaClean filter and descaling

Philips says that with the AquaClean filter, changed when the machine prompts you, the machine will not need descaling for up to 5,000 cups. The filter also helps provide clear, purified water. Descaling intervals depend on your water hardness and how you use the machine, and the manual explains how to follow the prompts.

Size and weight

The machine measures about 10.0 x 15.0 x 17.0 inches (25 x 38 x 43 cm) and weighs 17.6 lb (about 8 kg). It's a countertop machine, so measure the space under your cabinets, because you also need room to fill the bean hopper and water tank.

Who it suits

It suits households that drink several coffees a day, people who want milk-based drinks without a manual steam wand, and those who prefer fresh beans to pods. If you like to control every part of shot-pulling, a manual machine offers more hands-on control.

What to check before you buy

  • Counter space: allow for height to refill the hopper and tank.
  • Milk types: plant milks can froth differently; see what the manual advises.
  • Beans: check the manual for suitable beans, and whether oily or flavoured roasts are advised against.
  • Water: the filter and descaling schedule depend on your water hardness.
  • Cleaning: plan for daily rinsing of the LatteGo and regular cleaning of the brew unit.
  • Drink sizes: confirm that your usual mug fits under the spout.
