The Midea MDC22P1AWW is a compact portable dishwasher for small households and spaces without a built-in machine. It is designed for dorms, RVs and apartments, where it can sit on a countertop or fit into a cupboard, and it connects to a tap rather than needing permanent plumbing.

Capacity: six place settings

Midea rates it for six place settings, which it describes as right for two to three people, and says it holds up to about 70 pieces of tableware. Plates up to 10 inches (25 cm) in diameter fit. A place setting generally means a plate, bowl, glass, cup and cutlery for one person, so six is about half of a full-size dishwasher's standard capacity. The listing gives the size as roughly 17.2 inches high, 20.6 to 21.6 inches wide and 21.6 inches deep, and the weight as 44.1 lb.

Eight wash programs

Midea lists eight options:

  • Heavy, Normal, Baby-Care, ECO, Glass and Speed: the cycles with an extra drying function.
  • Mini-party and Rinse: extra options meant for a compact machine.

The Speed cycle takes 45 minutes, which Midea suggests for hurried situations such as hosting several rounds of guests. The Heavy program uses 12 washing nozzles and 360° spiral spray, with water up to 68°C and high pressure for stubborn residue. Programs with high temperatures and spray arms typically do best when large food scraps are scraped off first.

Energy Star and water use

The model is Energy Star compliant, and Midea says the water consumption can be as low as 2.77 gallons per cycle. Actual use depends on the program you pick.

Installation

The machine connects directly to a faucet, though a suitable adaptor is needed. Because it's portable, it can sit on a benchtop or be fitted into a cupboard. You also need drainage, so read the manual on hose positioning and tap compatibility. Midea notes that units are tested at the factory, so a little water inside a new machine is normal.

Who it suits

It suits students, RV owners, renters and couples or small families who either have no space for a built-in dishwasher or aren't allowed to install one.

What to check before you buy

  • Space: measure the counter or cupboard, including clearance for the door and hoses.
  • Tap fit: check that your faucet works with the adaptor, and what size of adaptor you may need.
  • Drainage: plan where the drain hose will go.
  • Dish sizes: a 10-inch plate limit may rule out large dinner plates or pans.
  • Weight: 44.1 lb is manageable but not light; consider the surface it stands on.
  • Detergent and upkeep: follow the manual on dishwasher detergent and cleaning the filter.
