The Midea Duo (model MAP12S1TBL) is a portable air conditioner for rooms up to 450 square feet (about 42 m²). It stands on the floor, vents through a window and uses variable-speed inverter technology. Midea built it around a hose-in-hose design intended to cool a room faster and more quietly than a conventional single-hose unit.

What the Duo hose design does

A typical single-hose portable air conditioner draws room air across its condenser and blows it outside. That removes air from the room, and warm air then leaks in through gaps around doors and windows. Midea's hose-in-hose design has two channels in one hose: one takes in outdoor air and the other exhausts it. Midea says this forms balanced air circulation indoors and helps stop hot air seeping in. It also claims "more than 2X" faster and stronger cooling, which is the brand's own comparison.

Understanding 12,000 BTU and 10,000 SACC

The headline 12,000 BTU is the older measurement method. The 10,000 BTU SACC figure is the Seasonally Adjusted Cooling Capacity, a newer US test that accounts for the heat a portable unit's own operation adds back to the room. SACC is the more realistic number for comparing portable units, and the 450 square foot coverage is Midea's guide for a typical room. Sunny rooms, high ceilings and kitchens usually need more capacity.

Inverter technology

A conventional compressor switches on and off. An inverter compressor varies its speed, so it can run steadily at a lower level once the room is cool. Midea says this saves more than 40% energy compared with the US federal standard, and lists a wattage of 1,200 watts and the refrigerant R-32. Inverter units typically hold a steadier temperature and run more quietly.

Noise and airflow

Midea lists operation as low as 42 dB when cooling, which it compares to a library. That figure is for the lowest setting, so higher fan speeds will be louder. The airflow is listed at 375.88 CFM, and Midea says the air duct system can project cool air up to 26 feet (about 8 m). A 102-degree swing is intended to change the airflow direction and avoid a direct blast of cold air.

Smart control and set-up

The unit has Wi-Fi and works with the Midea Air app, Google Assistant and Alexa, plus a remote. For installation, the listing describes a built-in design that stores the accessories with the unit and a vertical pull-out method for the window kit. It measures about 16.7 x 19.5 x 34.5 inches (42 x 50 x 88 cm) and weighs 72.7 lb (about 33 kg). It runs on 115 volts, and Midea gives a one-year parts and labour warranty.

Who it suits

It suits renters and homes where a window or wall air conditioner isn't allowed or practical, and people who care about low noise in a bedroom or office.

What to check before you buy

  • Window: check the window type and size against the kit in the manual.
  • Room size: compare the 450 sq. ft. guide with your room's sun, ceiling height and heat sources.
  • Power: check that your outlet and circuit suit the unit, and follow the manual and local codes.
  • Weight: at 72.7 lb, it's best moved on a flat, clear path.
  • Drainage: check how condensate is handled in the manual.
  • Wi-Fi: confirm your network works with the Midea Air app.

The short version

  • A portable air conditioner listed at 12,000 BTU (10,000 BTU SACC) for up to 450 sq. ft.
  • Hose-in-hose design that takes in and exhausts outdoor air.
  • Variable-speed inverter, with Midea claiming more than 40% energy saving versus the federal standard.
  • As low as 42 dB when cooling; Wi-Fi, app and voice control.
  • 72.7 lb, 115 volts, one-year warranty.
