The Midea MAW08S1VWT-A is a window air conditioner rated at 8,000 BTU. It uses inverter technology and can be controlled by remote, app or voice assistant. It is meant for a bedroom, small apartment or similar space of up to 350 square feet (about 32 m²). Here is what the specs mean in practice.

What 8,000 BTU and 350 sq ft mean

BTU measures cooling capacity. A higher number means the unit can remove more heat per hour. Midea says 8,000 BTU is suited to rooms up to 350 sq ft. Sun exposure, ceiling height, kitchens and the number of people in a room all change the load, so the figure is a guide, not a guarantee.

How an inverter changes things

Traditional window units switch the compressor fully on and off. An inverter unit varies the compressor speed so that it can run longer at lower output, which usually means steadier temperatures and less on/off cycling. Midea says the unit is ENERGY STAR certified and uses more than 35% less electricity than the Energy Conservation Standard requires. Treat that as a brand claim about the standard, since real use depends on climate and settings.

Modes, speeds and timer

The unit offers four modes: Auto, Cool, Dry and Fan. There are three fan speeds plus Auto, a 24-hour timer and an ECO energy-saver setting. Midea says the auto-swing louvers spread air evenly. A LED display shows the settings, and everything can be set from the panel, the remote, the app or by voice.

App and voice control

The Midea Air app (iOS and Android) lets you change settings from your phone, and the unit works with Alexa and Google Assistant. Midea gives the example of asking Alexa to set the unit to 72°F. This relies on a Wi-Fi connection and an account, so check that your home network reaches the window where it will sit.

Noise

Midea quotes noise as low as 50 dBA in the features list, and 40 dB in the description, which are two different figures. Noise generally depends on fan speed and on where the unit is installed, so the lowest setting is where the quietest figures apply.

Size, weight and installation

It measures 18.5 x 19.0 x 13.6 inches (about 47 x 48 x 35 cm) and weighs 43 lb (about 19.5 kg). It runs on 115V AC and comes with an installation kit. A washable filter is reached from the front panel.

Window units are heavy, so lifting and fitting it is often a two-person job. Follow the manual for installation, support and electrical requirements.

Who it suits

It suits a bedroom, home office or small apartment with a suitable window, and people who want to control cooling from a phone or by voice.

What to check before you buy

  • Window type and size: confirm that the width and height fit the unit and the installation kit.
  • Room size and sun: compare your room with the 350 sq ft figure.
  • Power: it runs on a 115V outlet; check the circuit and the manual's guidance.
  • Weight: 43 lb needs secure support and help installing it.
  • Rules: building or landlord rules on window units may apply.
  • Upkeep: the filter needs regular cleaning.
