The Levoit Superior Studio Smart (model LEH-S451S-WUS) is an evaporative humidifier with a 4.5-litre tank, app and voice control, and a built-in humidity sensor. It is aimed at bedrooms and living spaces where heating or dry weather leaves the air feeling parched. Here is how it works and what its numbers mean.
How evaporative humidification works
There are two common ways to add moisture to a room. Ultrasonic humidifiers vibrate water into a fine, visible mist. Evaporative humidifiers like this one use a fan to blow air through a wet wick filter, so water leaves as invisible vapour.
That difference matters for two reasons. First, when an ultrasonic model runs on hard tap water, the minerals can settle around the room as fine white dust; in an evaporative unit, the minerals stay behind in the wick. Levoit says this model leaves no white dust. Second, with no visible mist, nearby surfaces stay dry. Evaporative humidifiers also tend to slow down naturally as the air gets more humid, because moist air takes up water more slowly.
Output, coverage and run time
Levoit rates the output at up to 400 mL per hour, for rooms up to 600 sq ft (about 56 m²). On the lowest setting, a full 4.5-litre tank lasts up to 40 hours. Higher fan speeds use water faster, so expect shorter run times when the air is very dry.
Noise is listed at 19 to 40 dB, with 19 dB on the low fan speed. For context, 20 dB is roughly the level of rustling leaves, so the low setting is designed to suit a bedroom at night.
Tap water and top filling
The Superior Studio Smart works with regular tap water, so you don't need distilled or filtered water. It fills from the top: you pour water in without carrying the tank to the sink and turning it over.
Smart control and the humidity sensor
You can control the humidifier with the touch panel, the VeSync app, or a compatible third-party voice assistant. A built-in sensor holds the humidity at the level you choose and helps prevent over-humidifying.
Levoit gives the sensor's accuracy as ±5%, so a small difference from another hygrometer in the room is normal. You can calibrate the reading in the VeSync app. As a general guide, many people aim for indoor relative humidity of roughly 30 to 50 per cent; well above that, condensation can form on cold windows.
Cleaning and the washable filter
Evaporative humidifiers need regular cleaning, and Levoit has built several features around that:
- Washable wick filter: it can go in the washing machine and be reused. Levoit says it lasts up to 2 years with one wash a week.
- Auto Dry Mode: dries the filter after use.
- Self-cleaning mode: cleans the internal components automatically.
- Dishwasher-safe parts: the water tank, support frame and wick filter frame can go in the dishwasher at up to 70°C (158°F), with no heated drying or sterilisation cycle, and the tank placed securely so nothing presses on it.
A cleaning brush and a citric acid descaler come in the box.
What to check before you buy
- Room size: compare your room's floor area with the 600 sq ft coverage figure; open-plan spaces and high ceilings need more output.
- Floor space: the unit measures about 9.1 x 9.1 x 15.8 inches (roughly 23 x 23 x 40 cm) and weighs about 6.1 lb (2.8 kg).
- Upkeep: plan for a weekly filter wash and regular descaling, especially with hard water.
- App and voice control: check that your phone and voice assistant work with the VeSync app.
- Replacement filters: confirm genuine Levoit replacement filters for the Superior Studio are easy to get where you live.
