Levoit NeoClassic 650S smart humidifier: features and who it suits

The Levoit NeoClassic 650S is a smart humidifier with a 6.2-litre tank, made to add moisture to dry indoor air in rooms of up to 536 sq ft (49.8 m²). It combines an automatic mode that holds the humidity you set with app control, a quiet sleep mode and a design that comes apart for cleaning. Here's what its specs mean for everyday use.

Mist output, room size and run time

The maximum mist output is 320 mL per hour, and Levoit rates it for rooms up to 536 sq ft. One full tank lasts up to 62 hours.

Those two figures describe different settings. At the full 320 mL an hour, a 6.2-litre tank would empty in roughly 19 hours, so the 62-hour figure applies to the lowest mist levels. Room-size figures also assume typical conditions: a large, draughty room in a cold, dry winter will need more output than a small, well-sealed bedroom.

Auto mode and the humidity sensor

Auto mode reads the room with a built-in humidity sensor and adjusts the mist to hold your target level. Levoit gives the sensor an accuracy of ±5%, so a reading of 45% means the room is somewhere around 40 to 50%. Holding a set level helps prevent over-humidification.

Relative humidity is the amount of moisture in the air compared with the most it could hold at that temperature. Common guidance for homes is to keep it roughly between 30 and 50%; above that, condensation on cold windows can become a problem.

App, scenes and voice control

In the VeSync app you can set schedules, a timer and a target humidity, and see the room's humidity history. Smart Scenes set mist, light and sound together, for naps, yoga or focused work. Voice control is supported too.

There's a small aroma chamber that takes three to five drops of essential oil. Levoit is clear that oils go in this chamber only, never in the water tank.

Quiet running and the night light

On its low setting and in Sleep mode, it runs at 26 dB or less. For comparison, a whisper is usually put at around 30 dB, so it's a very low level for a bedroom at night. The night light has an adjustable colour temperature, from cooler to warmer tones, and a 360-degree rotating nozzle lets you aim the mist. Levoit describes it as suited to bedrooms and nurseries.

Cleaning and water

Every part that touches water comes apart. The sink twists off the base, and a wide opening makes the tank easy to refill from the top and reach inside.

The cover and the detachable sink can go in the dishwasher, with some limits from Levoit: no settings above 70°C (158°F), no heated drying or sterilisation cycles, and no more than once a week. The tank and the silencer cover are washed by hand.

Levoit recommends purified or distilled water. In many mist humidifiers, the minerals in hard tap water can leave a fine white dust on nearby furniture, and distilled water avoids that.

What to check before you buy

• Room size: that your room is within Levoit's 536 sq ft guide, allowing for high ceilings or draughts.
• Water: whether you're happy to use purified or distilled water, and how often you'll refill at the settings you use.
• Placement: a flat, water-safe surface, with the clearances the manual gives from walls, furniture and electronics.
• Smart features: that your phone runs the VeSync app, and which voice assistants work with it.
• Size: 8.8 x 8.8 x 14.1 in (22.3 x 22.3 x 35.9 cm), 4.87 lb (2.21 kg), 30 W.
• Upkeep: a regular cleaning routine, including hand-washing the tank.
