The Gevi 20 Bar Espresso Machine puts a conical burr grinder, an espresso pump and a steam wand into one silver body. It is aimed at people who want to grind fresh beans, pull a shot and froth milk without fitting a separate grinder on the counter. Here is what its specifications mean.

How the grinder and brewer work together

The grinder sits on top of the machine and drops grounds straight into the portafilter. It has 30 settings, from coarse to ultra-fine, and you can set how long it grinds, which controls the dose: the amount of coffee in the basket.

That matters because espresso is very sensitive to grind size. If water runs through the coffee too quickly, the shot tastes thin and sour; too slowly, and it turns bitter. Stepping the grind finer or coarser is the main way to tune a shot when you change beans. A burr grinder crushes beans between two ridged surfaces, which typically gives more even particles than a blade grinder, and grinding just before brewing keeps more of the aroma.

What 20 bar and a 58 mm portafilter mean

The 20-bar figure is the maximum pressure the pump can produce. Espresso is traditionally brewed at around 9 bar at the coffee itself, so the higher pump figure is mostly headroom, not the pressure at the coffee.

The portafilter is 58 mm across, the size used on most commercial café machines. A wider basket typically holds the coffee in a shallower, more even bed, and the common size makes accessories such as tampers easy to find. A tamper and filter baskets come in the box.

Shots, temperature and pre-infusion

One touch brews a single or a double shot, and both volumes are adjustable: about 1.0 to 1.7 oz (30 to 50 ml) for a single and 1.7 to 2.4 oz (50 to 71 ml) for a double.

Temperature is handled by NTC and PID control. An NTC sensor is a thermistor that measures temperature; a PID controller uses that reading to adjust the heater continuously instead of simply switching it on and off. The aim is steadier water temperature from shot to shot and while steaming, which matters because water that is too hot or too cool changes how the coffee extracts.

A pre-infusion stage wets the coffee at low pressure before full pressure is applied. This typically helps water flow through the puck more evenly, with fewer weak spots where it would otherwise rush through.

Milk, hot water and upkeep

The steam wand swivels 360 degrees and is meant for microfoam, the fine, glossy milk used in lattes and cappuccinos. Turning the knob switches it to hot water, for an Americano or for rinsing. A milk pitcher is included.

Day-to-day care is the usual for espresso machines: purge and wipe the steam wand straight after each use so milk doesn't dry on it, knock out and rinse the portafilter, and brush stray grounds from the grinder area. Cleaning tools come in the box. As with any machine that heats water, descale it from time to time as the manual describes, especially in hard-water areas.

Who it suits

It suits home coffee drinkers who want espresso, lattes, cappuccinos and Americanos from one machine, and who are happy to learn a little about grind size and dose. The manual steam wand and adjustable settings leave room to experiment. If you want milk drinks at the press of a button, note that frothing here is done by hand.

What to check before you buy

  • Space and height: it measures about 11.5 x 12.0 x 16.5 inches (29 x 30.5 x 42 cm). Check the clearance under wall cabinets, with room to fill the bean hopper on top.
  • Water tank and hopper: confirm their capacities and how easily the tank comes out for refilling.
  • Filter baskets: check which baskets are included if you also plan to use pre-ground coffee.
  • Grinder noise: every burr grinder is loud while it runs, which matters for early mornings in a shared home.
  • Upkeep and parts: read the cleaning and descaling schedule, and check that spare gaskets and baskets are available.

The short version

  • Espresso machine with a built-in conical burr grinder (30 settings, adjustable grind time) and a 20-bar pump.
  • 58 mm portafilter, with one-touch single and double shots in adjustable volumes.
  • NTC and PID temperature control plus pre-infusion for steadier extraction.
  • A 360-degree steam wand that also gives hot water; tamper, milk pitcher, baskets and cleaning tools included.
  • Suits people who want to grind, brew and steam milk on one machine.
