The Gevi ECMN0-WH0A1 is a semi-automatic espresso machine with a stainless steel body, a 58mm portafilter, a steam wand for milk and a pressure gauge. Gevi markets it for home use, with features borrowed from commercial machines. It makes espresso, lattes and cappuccinos.

What the 20 bar figure means

Pump pressure in espresso machines is often quoted at its maximum, but espresso is generally brewed at around 9 bar at the coffee. Gevi adds an OPV (Over Pressure Valve) and a three-way solenoid valve, and says they keep extraction pressure between 9 and 12 bar. The OPV releases excess pressure from the pump, and the three-way valve typically releases pressure after the shot, which leaves the used coffee puck drier and easier to knock out.

Seeing what is happening

Gevi gives the machine a touch control panel, an extraction pressure gauge and a digital display. Together they show pressure, time and temperature while you pull a shot. Seeing the pressure gauge is useful when you are adjusting grind size and tamping, since those two things largely decide how the shot runs.

Temperature control

The machine uses PID+NTC temperature control, with three options: 197.6°F (92°C), 201.2°F (94°C) and 204.8°F (96°C). PID control is a software loop that holds a steady temperature, rather than letting it swing up and down. Different roasts typically taste best at slightly different temperatures, so having three steps gives you room to adjust.

The 58mm portafilter

The portafilter is commercial-grade stainless steel with a 58mm diameter. Gevi compares it with 51mm portafilters, saying the larger diameter spreads the grounds more evenly and extracts more thoroughly. The 58mm size is also the standard on many commercial machines, so baskets and accessories in that size are widely available.

Steam wand

The semi-automatic steam wand has a three-hole nozzle and two settings, Mild and Strong. Gevi says this makes microfoam for lattes and latte art. As with any manual wand, results depend on practice.

Who it suits

It suits people who want manual control over grind, dose and milk texture, and who are happy to learn the process. A separate grinder is typically needed for fresh beans.

What to check before you buy

  • Space: the machine measures 15.6 x 9.1 x 14.2 inches and weighs 21.6 lb.
  • Grinder: confirm you have a grinder suited to espresso.
  • Accessories: check what is in the box, such as baskets, tamper and cleaning tools.
  • Water: check the tank size and any water quality advice in the manual.
  • Upkeep: plan for regular cleaning and descaling as the manual describes.
  • Power: check the electrical requirements and warm-up time in the manual.
