The Geek Chef GC-20 is a 20-bar espresso and cappuccino machine with a built-in automatic milk frother. Instead of steaming milk by hand, you fill a reservoir and the machine froths for you, which makes lattes and cappuccinos simpler to make at home.

How the automatic frother works

The machine has a 700 ml (23.7 fl oz) milk reservoir attached to it. Geek Chef says the frothing happens automatically, with no manual effort, and it highlights this as the main feature. For people who find a steam wand tricky, that takes out the technique. Check the manual for how to clean the milk system after use, because milk residue needs regular rinsing.

One-touch drinks and the 20-bar pump

Geek Chef lists one-touch operation for drinks such as Americano, latte and cappuccino. The 20-bar figure describes the pump's maximum pressure. Espresso extraction typically needs about 9 bars at the coffee, so the higher figure is best read as headroom. A real-time temperature display shows the brewing temperature as the machine works.

Three filters

The box includes three filters:

  • Single shot filter for one serving of ground coffee.
  • Double shot filter for a larger dose.
  • ESE pod filter for pre-packed espresso pods in the standard ESE format, which is convenient when you don't want to grind.

Because it takes ground coffee, you can use fresh beans if you have a grinder, or use pods for speed. A fine, even grind and firm tamp matter for the ground-coffee filters.

Water tank and size

The water tank holds 1.3 L (44 fl oz). The machine measures about 13.0 x 8.5 x 12.1 inches (33 x 21.6 x 30.7 cm) and has a stainless steel design that Geek Chef says saves space. That narrow 8.5-inch width suits tight counters.

Who it suits

It suits people who want milk drinks without learning to steam, small kitchens and offices, and anyone who likes the option of pods as well as ground coffee.

What to check before you buy

  • Milk system cleaning: understand how much rinsing the reservoir and frother need.
  • Cup height: measure the space between the spout and the drip tray for your cups.
  • Counter space: allow room to lift the lid and refill the tank and reservoir.
  • Milk type: check the manual for guidance on cold milk and alternatives.
  • Pods and grinder: ESE pods are a specific format; if you want ground coffee, a fine grinder helps.
  • Power: use a suitable outlet and follow the manual and local electrical codes.
  • What's included: the listing doesn't mention a tamper or grinder.
