The Garvee ES20BGS is a semi-automatic espresso machine with a built-in grinder, a steam wand and a 1500W motor. It puts grinding, brewing and milk steaming in one unit, so a home kitchen needs only one appliance for espresso, lattes and cappuccinos. Here is what its features mean.

Grinder and dosing

The built-in grinder has 30 grind settings. Grind size is one of the biggest variables in espresso: a finer grind slows the water and typically gives a stronger, more intense shot, while a coarser grind speeds it up. You can also vary the grinding duration and choose between single and double servings. Garvee also describes a weight-based dosing system that measures the right amount of ground coffee once you choose the number of cups, which takes away the need to weigh doses by hand.

The 20-bar pump

Garvee specifies a 20-bar Italian pump. Pump pressure figures are a maximum. Espresso is generally extracted at around nine bar at the coffee, and machines use a pressure regulator to manage the difference. A high figure is therefore best read as a sign of reserve pressure rather than a measure of how good the espresso will be. Garvee says the pressure produces a rich espresso with a layer of crema on top.

Dual PID temperature control

A PID controller keeps checking the water temperature and adjusts the heater in small steps, instead of simply switching it on and off. "Dual" means separate regulation for brewing and for milk steaming. Garvee lists a target brew temperature of 201.2°F (about 94°C), which sits within the range commonly used for espresso. Steady temperature typically means more consistent shots from one cup to the next.

Milk frothing and hot water

The steam wand can be used manually, to texture milk the way a barista does, and the listing also describes a hands-free frothing function. Garvee says this works with regular or plant-based milk and can make hot or cold foam. The same wand can supply hot water, and Garvee advises flushing it with hot water to keep it clean. Wipe the wand after every use, since milk dries on it quickly.

Size and water tank

The listing gives dimensions of 13.7 x 12.7 x 16.1 inches (about 35 x 32 x 41 cm) and a weight of 24 lb (about 11 kg). The water tank is removable, which makes refilling and rinsing easier. Measure the height under your cupboards, as the grinder hopper and tank need room to open or lift out.

Who it suits

It suits people who want to learn espresso at home without buying a separate grinder, and households that drink milk-based coffee. A semi-automatic machine still asks you to be involved: you choose the grind, check the shot and steam the milk.

What to check before you buy

  • Counter space: confirm the width, depth and the clearance above for refilling the beans and the tank.
  • Power: a 1500W appliance uses much of a standard outlet's capacity, so avoid sharing the circuit with other heating appliances.
  • Beans: check the hopper capacity and which beans the manual says to avoid.
  • Cleaning and upkeep: look at what the manual says about descaling, cleaning the grinder and emptying the drip tray.
  • Cup height: check that your cups and travel mugs fit under the spout.
  • Milk: if you want latte art, expect a learning curve.

The short version

  • A semi-automatic espresso machine with a built-in grinder (30 settings).
  • 1500W motor, 20-bar pump and dual PID temperature control.
  • Steam wand for manual milk texturing, plus hot water; Garvee also lists hands-free frothing.
  • Removable water tank; 24 lb.
  • Needs regular cleaning and descaling, as described in the manual.
