The Garvee 8,000 BTU 3-in-1 portable air conditioner (model NPLD3-05C/X1E) is a compact unit for cooling one room at a time. It switches between cooling, dehumidifying and fan modes and rolls between rooms on casters. Here is what the specs mean.

Capacity and room size

BTU measures how much heat a unit can remove per hour. Garvee says this one suits rooms up to 350 sq. ft. (about 33 square metres). The listing doesn't say whether the 8,000 figure uses the ASHRAE or the US Department of Energy method. Because the DOE method is more conservative and gives a lower number for the same machine, it is worth checking the unit's label. Sunny rooms, high ceilings and kitchens all raise the load.

Three modes

The unit has cool, dehumidifier and fan modes. Garvee lists a cooling range of 62 to 86°F (about 17 to 30°C), and says the fan and dehumidifier settings suit milder days. Two fan speeds control airflow.

Sleep mode and noise

A sleep mode and a 24-hour timer let you program the unit to your schedule. Garvee says operation stays below 50 dB, about the level of quiet conversation, though how a compressor sounds in a bedroom can differ from the number.

Maintenance

The brand says the unit is self-evaporating, which reduces how often you need to drain water by hand. Many portable units evaporate most condensate and exhaust it through the hose, though in very humid conditions water can still collect, so read the manual on draining. The filter is removable and washable: take it out and rinse it when dirty, which keeps airflow and performance up.

Window kit and setup

The package includes an exhaust hose and an adjustable window kit that Garvee says fits openings from 25.6 to 50 inches wide. It lists installation as taking minutes with no special tools. A short, straight hose with a sealed window panel usually works best.

The unit measures about 13.4 x 27.3 x 11.8 in as the listing gives it (the 27.3 in is the height) and weighs 47.4 lb (about 21.5 kg). Casters make it easy to roll between rooms, although you will want help on stairs.

Who it suits

It suits bedrooms, small living rooms, home offices and garages where a window or wall unit isn't practical, and renters who want something they can take with them.

What to check before you buy

  • Window size: measure the opening against the 25.6 to 50 inch range, and check the window style.
  • Room size and sun: compare 350 sq. ft. with your room.
  • Capacity method: check whether the figure is ASHRAE or DOE.
  • Power: check the plug and circuit.
  • Draining: read the manual on condensate in humid weather.
  • Filter upkeep: plan to rinse the filter regularly.
  • Storage: you will need floor space in use and a place to keep it off-season.
