The Garvee 15,000 BTU portable air conditioner is a freestanding cooler for larger bedrooms, offices and studio apartments. It cools, dehumidifies or circulates air, and it moves between rooms on wheels. It is the larger of Garvee's portable units, so here is what its specs mean in practice.

What 15,000 BTU means

BTU measures cooling capacity: how much heat the unit can remove per hour. Garvee says this model cools spaces up to 850 sq. ft. (about 79 square metres). The listing doesn't say which test standard the 15,000 figure comes from. Portable units are often quoted on the ASHRAE method, which gives a higher number than the US Department of Energy's SACC method, so it is worth asking for both figures.

Room size is only part of the picture. Sun-facing windows, high ceilings, open-plan layouts and kitchens all increase the cooling load and can make a unit feel undersized.

Three modes in one

A single machine covers three jobs. In cooling mode it removes heat and moisture. In dehumidifier mode it dries the air, which helps in damp rooms. In fan mode it only moves air. Garvee presents this as a way to cool, dry or circulate air as needed through the year.

Controls

An LED panel and a remote handle the settings. Garvee lists a 24-hour timer and a quiet sleep mode. The brand says the unit uses an eco-friendly refrigerant and is designed for lower energy use, but gives no efficiency figure in the listing, so check the unit's label or manual for the CEER figure and noise levels.

Moving and installing it

It measures about 20.4 x 18.1 x 34.3 in (52 x 46 x 87 cm) and weighs 83.8 lb (about 38 kg). The built-in wheels and side handles help you roll it around, but at that weight carrying it upstairs is a two-person job.

Garvee says the package includes a remote, adjustable window panels and an extendable exhaust hose, and that no drilling is needed to fit it in sliding or double-hung windows. The hose vents hot air outside, so a short, straight, well-sealed run usually works best.

Who it suits

It suits larger single rooms, home offices, studios and anyone who can't fit a window or wall unit, including renters. It is a lot of machine for a small bedroom, where a smaller unit is often enough.

What to check before you buy

  • Window type: confirm your window is sliding or double-hung and measure the opening against the panel range.
  • Room size and sun: compare the rated area with your room, allowing for sunlit windows and open layouts.
  • Test method: ask whether the BTU figure is ASHRAE or SACC.
  • Power: check the plug and circuit requirements in the manual.
  • Noise: the listing doesn't give a decibel level, so check the manual for it.
  • Drainage: read the manual on how condensate is handled.
  • Weight and storage: you will need floor space and somewhere to keep an 84 lb unit in winter.
