DREO 14,000 BTU Dual-Hose Portable AC: features, specs and who it suits

A dual-hose inverter portable air conditioner rated at 14,000 BTU (ASHRAE) or 10,000 BTU (DOE) for rooms of 200-300 sq ft, with self-evaporation and app control.

The DREO Inverter Portable Air Conditioner (model DR-HAC010S) is a dual-hose unit for cooling a bedroom or living space of about 200 to 300 sq ft (roughly 19 to 28 m²) where there's no built-in system. It vents through a window kit, adjusts its output with inverter technology and gets rid of condensed water on its own. Here is what its specs mean in practice.

Two BTU figures: ASHRAE and DOE

BTU per hour measures how much heat an air conditioner can remove from a room. DREO gives two figures: 14,000 BTU under the ASHRAE standard and 10,000 BTU under the US Department of Energy (DOE) standard.

The ASHRAE figure is the older, higher number, measured under fixed test conditions. The DOE figure, often called seasonally adjusted cooling capacity, also allows for heat that finds its way back into the room from the unit and its hoses, so it's lower and generally closer to real-world cooling. When comparing portable air conditioners, compare DOE figures with DOE figures.

Why two hoses matter

Single-hose portable units use room air to cool their own internal parts and then blow that air outside. That slightly lowers the air pressure in the room, so warm air seeps back in through gaps around doors and windows. A dual-hose unit draws that cooling air from outside through one hose and sends it back out through the other, so less of the cooled room air is lost. DREO says separating intake and exhaust reduces hot air backflow, for faster, more efficient cooling.

Inverter cooling and modes

A conventional compressor runs at full speed, switches off when the room reaches the set temperature, then starts again. An inverter compressor varies its speed instead, slowing down as the room nears the target. That typically gives a steadier temperature. DREO says the inverter and dual-hose design together make it 32% more energy-efficient than traditional models, and that a noise isolation system lowers operating noise.

Cooling runs from 61°F to 86°F (16°C to 30°C). There's also a dry mode, which removes moisture from the air, and a fan mode with three speeds plus auto.

No manual draining under 90% humidity

Air conditioners pull moisture out of the air as they cool, and many portable units collect it in a tank that needs emptying every few hours in humid weather. This one uses DREO's patented self-evaporating sensors and a pump to evaporate excess water automatically, so no draining is needed in rooms under 90% humidity. Check the manual for what to do in very humid conditions.

Controls and installation

You can change settings with the remote, the DREO app or Alexa voice control, so anyone at home can adjust it, including from another room.

The window kit fits both hung and sliding windows from 20 to 53 inches (about 51 to 135 cm). The unit measures about 14.4 x 17.3 x 28.1 inches (37 x 44 x 71 cm) and weighs 55.4 lb (about 25 kg), so plan where it will stand near the window, with room for both hoses. Follow the manual when setting up the window kit, the hoses and the power connection.

Who it suits

It suits renters and homeowners who want to cool one bedroom or living space of up to about 300 sq ft without a permanent installation, and who would rather not empty a water tank. The noise isolation system and remote control are aimed at bedroom use, where lower noise matters at night.

What to check before you buy

  • Room size: measure the room against the 200-300 sq ft range; sunny rooms, high ceilings and kitchens typically need more cooling.
  • Window: check it's a hung or sliding window between 20 and 53 inches; other window types may need a different setup.
  • Space and weight: at 55.4 lb, decide where it will stand and how you'll move it.
  • Power: check the outlet near the window and follow the manual's guidance on the power connection.
  • Humidity: if the room is often very humid, read the manual's section on drainage.

The short version

  • A dual-hose inverter portable air conditioner: 14,000 BTU (ASHRAE) or 10,000 BTU (DOE), for rooms of about 200-300 sq ft.
  • Separate intake and exhaust hoses; DREO says it's 32% more energy-efficient than traditional models.
  • Self-evaporating, with no draining needed below 90% humidity.
  • Cool (61-86°F), dry and fan modes; remote, app and Alexa voice control.
  • Window kit for hung and sliding windows from 20 to 53 inches; 55.4 lb.
